Yup. No city site plan approval was needed which saved a year.

The site plan for demo of the campus was approved today. There is another permit for the demo that is still in review.

I like how they are spaced just far enough apart to prevent one falling building from hitting another building. It's as if it was planned that way.

Lol. I was gonna be funny and say that they actually build the buildings sidways on the ground, then use cranes to hoist them up and in place... hence the spacinf...

The demo permit was approved today. We should finally see more stuff happening on the site in the near future - hopefully another implosion.

But that wouldn't hold up demo.

The zoning change for the 30:1 FAR increase was passed by the PC in December. It has also probably been approved by the CC since then, but I haven't been able to verify that.

Demolition of beloved UMC Brackenridge Tower begins
The tower has stood in Austin for 50 years and the hospital itself for more than 100 years. It served thousands of patients, doctors and nurses before closing.

Ted Burton with Central Health, the group that owns the property, told KVUE they’re not doing an implosion, instead, construction crews are tearing it down piece by piece.

This demolition process for the tower was expected to begin last summer, but Burton told KVUE there was a delay getting the demolition permit from the City.

As for the tower, Central Health is planning to ask Austin City Council that it be rezoned for commercial use at a meeting next week. Because crews are tearing down the tower piece by piece, it could take anywhere from eight months to a year to complete the demolition

I'm wondering if there is an asbestos issue or the explosives needed to down this building would exceed safety parameters due to the thickness of this structure which could damage surrounding buildings. Maybe even, so they can salvage some of the material. No matter, I agree demolishing this sturdy tower piece by piece could take months. But I guess there's no real hurry since there doesn't seem to be an imminent plan for this site. Not going to miss the old Brackenridge tower when its gone, not as much as the Erwin Center which I alway thought of as an iconic landmark, especially at night when lit up.

Interesting angles, allows us to see that they did dig under what will be the Red River extension.

Nice. That gives a good view of the Gary L. Thomas Engineering Building under construction now on the UT Campus, south of the UT engineering building. I had guessed it might be 115 feet based on the rendering, but it looks to be 10 to 20 feet below the main roof of the engineering building, so I'd guess maybe 135 feet. I'm not sure if it's topped out yet in that photo either. It's supposed to be 7 floors.

Thought some of y'all would enjoy this read/historical look-back for this site. Interesting how this place has evolved over the years! And still evolving.

We should know on Monday if State projects like this one (Block 164 only), 1601 Congress & 1801 Congress and DKR follow Travis Co.'s SIP Order. I can't find any info about that, but the State (and UT) don't necessarily follow local rules.
