Years ago PEC redid a lot of their substations in their whole region with pre-fab stone fences rather than chain link. Even something like that could work here on the non-art part of it.
Here's a proposal I just posted about the substation:

Quote:
That power substation could be covered by some large tarp structures, which could be done in an art form themselves - kinda like a combination of Christo & Austin Cool.

Saw a tram station in Las Vegas that had a very large structure overhead like that with a very substantial framework similar to the poles in the Austin power substation. However, its "tarp" covering was just plain white. The substation could be covered with a free form colorful version which might become a very nice addition to the Austin waterfront skyline instead of the present eyesore.

Given all of the power lines, I'm not sure if that's a particularly safe option.

That's what engineers are for. They could reroute the incoming lines through a smaller "entrance". And the covering need not be a total enclosure like a tent, but semi-open & spacious.

Maybe if one of our members has the expertise, he/she could weigh in on the possibilities.

Then again, it's probably just pie in the sky speculation.

I mentioned this in the photo's thread already but other cities have enclosed or covered substations so it's possible.

This is what I think they should do. Make it look like a house or something like these building from this article.

I could definitely live with something like that - especially if it proved more difficult to move the substation altogether. Great find!

Maybe they can rotate the library AND put it on top of the substation.

I like that the main entrance opens to a pedestrian/bike trail rather than a parking lot.

Whether they remove the power station or not they should at least move the power lines running to the station underground. That view would be much nicer without the lines. Sure let's have a lovely outdoor plaza with high voltage power lines running through....

I like how the tension wires on the bridge mimic the high voltage wires.

Being a former APL employee at the Howson Branch on Exposition (1962-66), guess I'll have to go check out the new digs sometime.

I think the location is an excellent location being very central to other things besides the library - I can envision it being a nice place to meet and being a focal point for the community. That is if there is anyone left that can actually read.
I agree to this if any in Austin that change. Then it would be probably for the best of the place. For more reliable and high-tech place for people to meet.

I did that exact job in L.A. in 1993 when the Central Library reopened after being renovated due to a fire in 1986. It's a beautiful building. If you're ever in downtown Los Angeles, I highly recommend stepping inside for a few minutes to check it out.

I wonder if the homeless population that hangs around Faulk will migrate to the new location? Or will they increase at Faulk now that there may not be people calling the police on them. Be interesting to see what they do and how the residents near the new one react to the potential increase of homeless people.

This is just a guess trying to look at it impartially so doesn't necessarily mean I agree nor disagree, but considering the amount of money the city has put into transforming that entire area plus all of the residential not least the Independent being nearly next door, a large homeless presence will likely not be tolerated. There's families with children that already live in the area with more moving in. It will also draw people from around the city including tourists. There will soon be a hotel on the other side of the creek. The city will clamp down on loitering especially at night.
