I went back in my files and found the original photo before it was cropped and then zoomed in really close. I think for sure it's not the parking garage for that white complex. It's the one for the reddish complex. Look just to the left of that reddish complex. There appears to be an attached white structure that's lower than the actual offices. The far left corner of that garage is "touching" the Moonlight Tower of the Zilker tree in the photo. I think that's the parking garage the photo you were asking about was taken from because the top floor looks like it's just barely above the tree line, and in the nighttime photo you were asking about, you can see trees in the foreground and the tops of streetlights.

Hmm... I need to find someone with a car who wants to go on an "adventure" with me.

Nice pics. That gingerbread house reminded me. My sister and brother-in-law told me there's a 4 or 5 foot tall gingerbread UT Tower in the lobby at the big Hilton. I doubt I'll have time to get over there to see/photograph it, but if anyone else is so inclined, go check it out.

Why don't they hang lights across Congress anymore? Took my parents up Congress the other night to check it out and see the tree. They were disappointed that the lights are no longer there. I think that would be so awesome with the capitol as the backdrop.

I miss those, too. When I was a kid my parents had a white '77 Cadillac Deville with dark tinted windows. It had a sunroof that we'd open whenever we drove down Congress at Christmas time. Back then you could still drive through the Trail of Lights, and again, we'd roll open the sunroof. My brother and I would unbuckle and stick are heads through the sunroof to look at the lights as we drove through the trail.

Just saw something interesting. You may have posted this earlier this year.

The Downtown Austin Alliance hired Blachere Illuminations to light up Congress from Cesar Chavez to 11th this year. The difference is the energy efficient lights will remain all year. Blachere has done the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysees, among others.

You all might find this interesting. Here is a before-and-after comparison of the Austin skyline between 2001 and 2013. I took both from the same location, outside of Barton Creek Mall. (Pardon the quality).

Some really cool video showing the statue being lifted off the Capitol dome in 1986. It's such a surreal thing to see it being lifted off. Also check out the crane for the Doubletree Hotel at 15th & Guadalupe.

NO WAY...better stores and far better restaurants today...I moved here in 1970...Other than the Armadillo, Soup Creek, and cheap pot there was not much..hell I wish Austin was the size of LA...Small towns are great to grow up in and great to die in but that's about the only advantages they have going for them

The skyline is getting close to being what you'd expect from a city with a population of over 800k. I think in 5 years or less we will have a truly worthy of its population skyline. As it is now, it is beautiful.

Metro Population wise, I would say only Charlotte beats us in the skyline department and Charlotte beats many towns much larger at least as far as skyline is concerned. They have a ton banks HQ'd there and you know how banks love their towers.

However with as fast as our population is growing, we will be entering competition with more established cities like Pittsburgh and Cleveland among others. Honestly, there are many cities in the 2-2.5 million metro that our skyline beats. The biggest knock to our current skyline is lack of density in areas. Luckily, that is getting fixed fast. The only other thing that would be nice is a taller signature office tower besides the Frost.

Not so much a City vs City post, but I do like looking at various cities skylines.

Charlotte has a nice skyline. But I don't guess I understand what makes one skyline better than another. Some skylines that are considered really nice I find to be ugly and boring. Do people only consider height and density?

I know Austin's skyline is a fledgling, but I think it's one of the most attractive. Combine the attractive buildings with the greenery and the river, and you get some of the best photos of a downtown I've seen. I know I'm biased, but that's just what I've noticed.

I tend to not be as impressed with dense skylines that are just big, tall blocks. Other people do seem to be impressed with those.
