Originally the line was going to be at-grade LRT but the decision was reversed when a more thorough comparative analysis was performed. When integrated into the existing SkyTrain network the line is expected to have two and a half times the ridership by 2021 than if it were LRT, half the travel time, greater frequency and lower operating costs. The line will be seamlessly integrated into the Millennium Line at Lougheed Station so one will be able to have a single seat trip from Coquitlam to Vancouver. Once the Millennium Line is extended to Central Broadway it will connect with the Canada Line and if the line goes all the way to UBC we will have a unified, single seat east-west backbone to compliment our north-south and northwest-southeast lines. If I recall correctly the difference in budget between doing the line as LRT and SkyTrain was about a hundred and fifty million, which is greatly offset by the operational savings and higher ridership projections.

Four (I believe) speaches were made about the new cars detailing their background, features, advances, and effect on the system. After the speeches, media were invited for a photo opportunity outside and inside the new train. Once that was done, others were allowed on board.

I'm impressed with the new trains. Pretty stylish and feel comfortable inside. Some differences I noted between this set and the mock-up was of course the map, the cab colour scheme is black instead of off-white, and there are perch seats located behind the cab infront of either platform door. The perch seats might encourage blocking of the doorways, but if no one else but those occupying those seats is in front of the door, there should be adequate move for those boarding and alighting. A TTC employee, seeing our intrest, showed us a video he took of the emergency ramp being used on the front of the train. It deployed quickly and appeared to do so with little effort.

Two photos from the event today:

On hand for the unveiling were Toronto Mayor David Miller, Ontario Minister of Transportation Kathleen Wynne, federal Minister of Labour Lisa Raitt, TTC Chair Adam Giambrone, and Raymond Bachaunt, Bombardier President of Transportation North America.

The nose of the train is the first to feature a streamlined profile on the subway system. With only two driver's cabs on the train now, at front and back, the compartment extends from one side to the other. While the driver will naturally stay in the front of the train, the guard will move to the back.

Once Automatic Train Control has been completed, drivers will not be needed to control the train, but may become the door operators from this position, taking over for the guard.

The front features a rather underwhelming and low-res LED message board that announces the train's destination.

Really? Is this all they can manage? Lucky for us Toronto's tiny and simple system means that few people ever need bother checking this sign.

Inside the train there are several innovations, at least for Toronto. Behind the official party you'll see another low-res LED changeable message sign on the ceiling. It will most often be used to indicate the next station and on which side the doors will open.

Doors are framed by clear partitions that open up the visual space through train. Poles feature portions coated will anti-microbial paint.

Maps above the doors will indicate which station the train is at, and remaining stations before the terminal.

Spots near the doors outside the driver's cab sport bum rests.

Wheelchair tie-down spots feature quick raise-and-lower seats.

Space between cars was formerly wasted: articulations now mean people will be able to walk freely the length of the train for more even loading, and for more loading in total. The TTC expects to be able to move 10% more people on the line with the new trains, and possibly 30% more once Automatic Train Control is introduced.

The continuous open space in the trains looks very, very long. The following views look through the length of four cars.

The exterior of the trains is much smoother than the existing fleet, dispensing with the thousands of rivets in place of more aerodynamic welds.

While it is difficult to see the welds in this photo taken without flash, the following photo with flash highlights the welds.

The first Toronto Rockets will be in service early in 2011.

Obligatory mention that most of those subway cars were built in Thunder Bay.

I'm jealous of how clean and simple the cars are on the outside. The Canada Line cars are plastered up like a Formula one race car, with stickers from translink, various levels of government, airport authority, other consortiums involved, etc...

Cool looking subway cars. Clean on the outside with no stickers or any advertisements and lots of room to move around so your not stuck in just one car. Good for people who are claustrophobic.

I don't think that its a matter of "embracing" LRT. I think we're all fairly sold on more modern rapid transit systems. I think the issue municipalities have is the cost. LRT doesn't come as cheap as buses.

The new trains aren't going to be blue?

Also they look like light-rail trains...lazy design on Bombardier's part. The current trains look much better.

I agree some blue accents would have helped with branding. But overall, I love the LRT look for subway trains. The metal boxes belong in NYC.

Our Canada line trains would have looked nice if it weren't for the hot-rod paint job:

LOL, those are pretty homely.

I'm a big fan of London's cars, even though the headroom around the doors is limited. Barcelona's metro also has really nice trains.
