^space wise it will do wonders for the city, but vancouver had an opportunity with this one....and went "let's get us a hybrid Chevy Malibu" - sure it wins awards for its usage and the like, but will everyone want to come and see it? take pictures of it? have it as a symbol of themselves?

This project should have been on par with a sydney opera house....something renowned, something inspiring, something that defined vancouver's cityscape.

thanks j-lo for the images.

personally, for $800+ million, it's obviously not a dream building. but still, it ought to do its job well and the new marina/float plane terminal will really bring a lot to the area. in the end, it does a nice job of transitioning from the sterile glass leisure zone of coal harbour and the cbd along the water (and wait until waterfront village is developed, that transition role will figure even more prominently).

^which would be fine for a building in burnaby say, but the centre of your city on prime land/water, with an opportunity to give something for people to remember or associate vancouver with....fail.

This building has actually grown on me as it's progressed. It looks impressive when viewed from the west. But yeah, for $800M, one might have expected something more ... iconic?

What I would have liked to see:
- public access to at least some of the green roof areas
- another cruise ship berth (coming from Ballantyne Pier is NOT the best first impression of the city)
- additional access for public ferry services, similar to Sydney's Circular Quay. Do we really need another marina?

Oh well. It is what it is I guess.

I wondered about that.

They are saving that for City of Vancouver and their new Waterfront Station plan =)

A small update | June 12th

The built form of the new convention centre is now clear. It will be a great addition to Harbour Green Park and this section of the Seawall. Less than a year left to go.

My photo, taken June 12th, 2008

The main staircase from the Seawall to the Convention Centre plaza is nearly done.

The silver lining about all of the recent unseasonably wet weather is that it was just perfect for the green roof to take root before the hot summer weather hits.

The new Convention Centre and Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel as seen from the Harbour Centre lookout tower.

Great update SFU. I snapped a few photos today too but it doesn't add much to what you've already posted unfortunately:

And I just realized the tall skinny guy with the jeans and black t-shirt is in both of our pics. Looks like we just missed eachother!

That's cool SFU and Raggedy almost ran into each other. Out of all the possible places you both could have been in the world, you both chose to take pictures of the Convention Centre on the same day, almost at the same time. Cool...

That's pretty wild how close Raggedy and I were to one another. Small world.

A couple new ones from Stanley Park today, June 15th.

great shots guys!

i noticed them installing some nice stonework for the walkway that wraps around the building. looks good. i was afraid it was going to be all concrete. the walkway right up against the building is also in stone. the middle area i assume would be for bikers/rollerbladers which is consistent with the rest of the seawall.
