That's an interesting question. I wonder what the experts on here say about sub city centres and what it would take in this case to meet the definition.

Sorry for the incoming tangent, but man do I hate those new traffic light poles. They are so bloody sterile and boring. I miss the old poles with the curvature. It felt uniquely Winnipeg, instead of these boxy 90 degree angle pole things

I also miss the old traffic lights with the one big red light and two smaller amber and green lights. What we have now is just so generically American

re: light poles

They're even more offensive when they're plunked down in the Exchange District and along downtown Portage Ave. where there's a somewhat coherent streetscape already in place. On Princess they're just absolutely atrocious.

Is there any recent activity? It seems like there has been no progress with those steel beams for a few weeks.

Nothing on the steel but steady progress on concrete.

The large red light and minimum two smaller light signals are very few and far between. I haven't seen them in quite some time. Perhaps in older neighbourhoods in and around downtown. I remember when I was much younger, they were everywhere. Although I do recall seeing those types of traffic signals in other cities in Canada. Apparently, Toronto still has or had them.

As for the curvature style they're pretty cool. There used to be a local company who manufactured the traffic signal poles, and the city was their local customer. My uncle used to work for that company, but there was a change of hand with that company along with so many disputes and internal politicking. Long story short, it no longer exists, and my uncle, after nearly a decade, is still fighting for his pension for that company.

I also noticed more steel on site for the northern half of the building. One thing for sure, this will be a large, imposing building for Pembina Hwy.

Sorry, just seeing this now. Vancouver still has a fair amount of large red light and smaller green and amber light fixtures as well.

Yeah, Winnipeg had some very unique traffic lights and poles for most of our history. I'm sad to hear about your uncle and his company. What we are getting now appears to be typical American looking junk. Why people think this is an improvement instead of maintaining our own style, I will never understand.

Those new columns look like they just stuck them in the dirt.

Does anyone know when demolition of the Cambridge Hotel is planned for? It still looks like business as usual, with the Cambrige still in use.

Thanks for all the pictures today on this and other threads, ColdRain&Snow. Nice to see how these projects are coming along.
The Point is beginning to bring a bit of life to that stretch of Pembina. Won’t be long before 1011 Pembina changes it completely.

On the McGillivray/Beaumont proposal: good to see a bit of density there, but what’s with all the surface parking so close to rapid transit to the west and a major bus route to the east?

Those parking lots are park-and-rides for the transit line and are in the hydro corridor. There's high voltage lines that run over top and hydro would never allow any structure built directly underneath it, so aside from a treeless park, it's a better use for the land.

Hydro was the one that had Crampton's market on a lease for their location at Waverley/Abinojii Mikanah but had a policy shift that did not permit them being there, so they ended the lease and Crampton's moved to Roblin and later shut down.
