As an Uber driver, I get passengers that come here on business and they remark how Austin changes so much and how many new tall buildings it gets since the last time they were here so they notice.

Out of towner here (who's done a few month+ long trips to Austin in the past few years though). Before I started following this forum I was always surprised by how much things had changed between visits. Compared to San Francisco, buildings seem to go up really quickly in Austin too which I think adds to the surprise.

I think the advantage that Austin has is the fact that most of our substantial towers are new. Apples to oranges, if NYC builds a new tower, it doesn't stand out as much unless it's a supertall, but even then it can get lost in the forest from most angles. Austin builds a new tower and it seems that nearly every single one makes an impact from multiple angles.

On a flight recently as we descended into ABIA with a good view of Austin, two guys in the row behind me with NY accents were surprised how:

1) Green Austin was - I guess they had an image of west TX in their minds

2) Big and modern the DT skyline is

I also hosted some old friends for ACL who lived here years ago and they were astounded at buildings like Indeed and Block 185.

I think Austin's skyline is a surprise to people because 1) it's now one of the most modern skylines in the USA, dominated by 2010s architecture, and 2) they've seen very little of it in the media, e.g. flyover footage during sports events. During one of the televised AFC home games recently someone I was watching with made the point that you rarely see those kind of slow skyline flyover shots of downtown, that it makes it look like a different and much bigger city.

I was in San Antonio in June and was talking with the doorman/guard at the Freeman Coliseum there, and after mentioning that I was from Austin he right away mentioned Tesla and how much Austin was growing. And that was way before the HQ announcement. So, I'd say we're definitely on the radar now of more average people than strictly those who are urban geeks like us.

Be surprised how many people talk about how much the Austin skyline has grown. I think more people are shocked when I tell them Austin isn't quite done growing, and that in a few short years the city will be home to the tallest building in Texas. Their expression is jaw dropping.

I like to point to 44 East and tell unsuspecting friends/family/clients that in the next five years or so we’ll have ten more buildings as tall or taller. That always blows people’s mind a little.

I've had similar experiences. When trying to tell people what's coming, they don't seem to believe it.

Most other people have no idea what is on the horizon for downtown. They are completely unaware of the buildings, plans for Waller Creek, plans for the Seaholm intake, etc. Hell, many don't even realize that we're going to have trains running underneath the streets. This was kind of my point. People notice the changes to the skyline, sure. It's impossible not to notice. But unlike people on this forum, they don't care enough to pay much attention to what's happening.

The thing with California is that we have to dig deep into the ground to stabilize the buildings for earthquakes. Texas just straight up builds right away which I like

My gf actually thought the same when we visited in July. She was expecting to see desert, cacti and horses all over. To her defense, I had the same expectations when I was 7 and I went to Texas (Houston) for the very first time. She was surprised with all of the trees and nature around the city.

Yeah, I've noticed it. It's crazy bright, too. That south face is the brightest light on the skyline now.

Golden hour this evening was beautiful

Just a couple of thoughts... 44 East is a dominant tower from the south and east and completely blocks 70 Rainey, Block 185 came out a lot nicer than what I thought it would, I love the glass on Block 71, 6X is starting to poke out a bit, Hyatt Centric Congress looks tiny but the building itself came out great!

Absolutely beautiful. I wish this could be permanently pinned on the Texas Reddit. “What makes Austin different from any other city in Texas? So many reasons but the geography is a big one!”
