My prediction is Regina either doesn't accept the changes needed to get the $35M, or we get it but they have to pay it back because we didn't meet our end of the bargain.

Based on the absolute riot from trying to build a nice four story condo on 13th avenue years ago, or the new proposed building close to Douglas Ave. I can't see City Council being tough enough to allow for higher density. I hope I am wrong but, I just can't see it happening.

Does Regina city council not realize the absolute gift they've been given? Regina has an opportunity to get ahead of the curve and keep housing costs down while attracting thousands who can't afford to live in the larger cities or thousands of people looking to get into a mid-sized city instead. Silly.

Council will love this because they can now ignore the NIMBYs and tell them to complain to the feds.

You certainly may be right. I just made an "out there" prediction, because, I just find it hard to imagine these changes happening after much more minor ones being shot down regularly over the past decades (or more?). All the community plans and urban design best practices were thrown out immediately once there were more than a few complaints.

I think I may just lack imagination haha.

City Hall endorsed the 20 metres in height (six-storeys), as-of-right, within 200 metres of a main transit route or transit hub. zoning change despite significant of opposition. This is a take to the heart for the Nimbys.

Does anyone have map showing what this means to Regina neighborhoods?

CBC Story:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatche...ted%20to,units%20in%20Regina%20by%202026.

This is pretty radical for Regina. Think of 6 storey buildings anywhere within 200m of the dashed lines. Some of these are quiet residential streets!

Has anyone seen the Viterra building/tower? Sorry I don’t have a pic, but the upper floors have had the precast paneling removed - install of new huge windows??

I'm appears that's what it is. I can only see the south face of the tower, where two panels have been removed from each the 9th, as well as the 10th floors. I assume more panels had been removed from the west face considering the large crane spent much of last Friday over there. I often wondered why they originally went with so few windows - especially since they are narrow. They could have used larger windows when floors 8 to 11 were added in the early 1980s.

As an aside, what's the local assessment of your RT plan? Logical? Silly? Going to be useless? I find transit infrastructure fascinating and would love your takes on it. I assume BRT or are you guys going to be yet another city that beats Winnipeg to LRT?

Regina Rapid Transit™ will be a button that auto-honks your horn after you exceed 120km/h on the Ring Rd.

There isn't a plan.

Are those corridors highlighted on the map from the CBC article not RT corridors?

They are, but there's not plan to actually create RT. No stations, no routes, no funding, no nothing.

The could become that but on this map they are main transit corridors, which directly mirrors the terminology in the Federal Housing Accelerator Program.

Brutal. You guys have such a golden opportunity because it would be cheap to start with your population size and you'd have something tangible to plan future development around.

We were going to build a monorail system modeled after the Springfield Monorail, that is until we learned of its failure from The Simpsons. Back to the drawing board I guess

Saskatoon's BRT is way ahead of us. They are larger and have bridge issues though.

Even if the City of Regina does all that it is required to do to secure the $35M from the infrastructure funding for housing, the province may end up wiping it out.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatche...federal-infrastructure-funding-1.7162445

Alberta is already looking at preventing the federal government from dealing directly with municipal governments. It would be nice to see some cooperation for the benefit of the cities/municipalities.

https://calgaryherald.com/news/politics/bill-18-provincial-approval-federal-funding-agreements

Scott Moe and Danielle Smith would rather scuttle the deal than be seen to be cooperating with Justin Trudeau who is essentially poking the bear in two provinces where his popularity isn't too high. It's all political b/s.

Road base is started to get stockpiled just south of the rail crossing on Pinkie Road for the road rebuild.

I had assumed that temporary storm water bypass in Wascana Park would have been gone by spring. Turns out they haven't even designed a permanent fix yet, and construction won't be until next year.
