Yeah, my favorite view spot in the country. The look and feel of that highway when descending into the south Okanagan in the summer feels like nothing else in Canada.

The air is sweet with Ponderosa Pine and starts warm at the top but ends sweet with sagebrush and hot at the bottom. The best I ever had was when I was about 10 years old my dad drove me to the top, dropped me off, and I road my bike all the way down. My Dad clocked me at a max of 80km an hour on the longest straight stretch.

So may amazing stretches of highways in BC that will never be represented on those "best highways to drive" lists because they are too obscure / not mainstream enough to be recognized. Kind of sad really (examples are the old #5 from Merritt to Kamloops, the entire Crowsnest (my favorite part though is Princeton to Osoyoos), the #1 from Lytton to Kamloops, etc...

I took a spin by the 404 extension yesterday on my way to work to check on the progress. The freeway mainline looks pretty well complete, aside from a few exit signs that need to be installed. There is still some landscaping work to be done at both the Queensville Sideroad and Doane Road grade separations, and a fair amount of civil works left at the Doane Road overpass before it finally opens. I am not sure when the day will be, could be within a week or so though.

I just wrapped up my mini-break in Corner Brook, on Newfoundland's west coast. 1,920 km return, plus a lot of running around while I was out there (I went to Lark Harbour, Howley, Nicholsville, etc.).

It's starting to depress me how much worse the weather is in St. John's than the rest of the island. On the way there, and on the way back, it was gorgeous out on the west coast and shitty in town.

A few shots of the highways, travelling across the island from east to west:

Some of the highways are pink. Others are nearly white (none of those turned out, unfortunately).

When I was getting close to Deer Lake, I saw a sign that said, "Deer Lake: Next 3 Interchanges", and I laughed out loud thinking... bullshit. No way Deer Lake has one, let alone three. But, as far as I can tell, they actually do. Strange.

the 3th remind me of the Route 175 between Québec and Saguenay and the 4th the A15 in the Laurentians between St-jerome and Mont-Tremblant

I found one highway that was rough.

Route whatever to Lark Harbour. It's REALLY rough, probably because (unlike virtually every other provincial highway on the island) it doesn't have two access points to the Trans Canada Highway. It literally is an hour off the highway and just ends at the ocean, you have to go back EXACTLY the way you came. I didn't know that. And I hated it.

But it was still very worth the drive.

I've visited the Avalon and did locum work (filling in for another MD) a couple of times in Grand Falls/Windsor, but aside from a brief touch down at the airport in Deer Lake, I've never visited the west coast. It looks like Cape Breton on steroids.

I will definitely have to plan a visit, perhaps in the next year or two. One of the things on my bucket list is to travel up the great northern peninsula to St. Anthony and l'Anse aux Meadow, and perhaps skip across the Strait of Belle Isle to extreme eastern north shore Quebec and Labrador, just to say that I was there.

Is this the first time a 400 series highway has been realigned?

That new bridge is for lake ridge road as well, not the WDL.

Is the realigned portion still going to be 6 lanes? Isn't the eventual plan to widen the 401 through the Durham region? If it is, they might as well do it now, I would think.

No, numerous sections of 400 series highways have been realigned. OTOMH, most recently, the 401 was realigned to the north when the Stevenson Road interchange was constructed in Oshawa.

The ultimate plan for Durham is to have the collector's xpress system go to the WDL, 10 lanes to courtice road, and then 8) lanes to 35/115. None of that is funded however.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Seems like such a shortsighted idea to design the interchange for just 6 lanes.

I don't know how they're going to fit the C/D system past Westney road, though. Are they going to move the tracks or expropriate?

Gorgeous pics, SHH. Newfoundland looks like it'd be really fun to drive. Windy, topsy-turvy roads with stunning scenery and quaint little towns dotting the routes (and I'd imagine not too much traffic). Like a more dramatic version of our Muskoka, who's highways & back roads are some of my favourite things to drive.

Yeah, it's fun - and I imagine quite similar.

The only downside for us is that the Trans Canada Highway cuts across the interior of the island. You can count on one hand the number of times you can catch a glimpse of the ocean the entire 700-km trek across the island.

But the secondary routes are usually quite lovely:

The only big exceptions that come to my mind are the Coast of Bays Highway, which cuts across the interior running north-south, and much of the Heritage Run Highway, which is very isolated for most of the length of the Burin Peninsula before becoming more seaside and scenic from Marystown south.

The plan is to widen the highway to the north through the Westney Road interchange. The existing structure will carry both the eastbound express and collector lanes, as well as the westbound express lanes. A new structure will be built for the westbound collector lanes immediately to the north of the existing structure. There will be some property impacts however.
