This.

Which begs the question of how long before the next expansion is pushed through the planning process? It sounds like these gates will be taken up as soon as they are complete. May take about 2-4 years for them to approach capacity.

I expect a slowdown in air traffic growth so there should be a breathing period. This is purely my personal opinion. How long or severe the slowdown will depend on what happens over the next 2 to 4 years.

The updated master plan can't come soon enough.

I think the slowdown may happen sooner than we think, unless there's an explanation for those drooping PAX counts in 2016?

Have there been any plans or discussions for a new airline lounge? Delta Sky Club or Amex Centurion Lounge would be a great addition to the airport as it expands.

I believe room may become available when the airport offices are moved out of the main terminal.

So, the Barbara Jordan Terminal will reach its "new" operational capacity three years after the 9-gate expansion opens. Assuming a 4% annual growth rate, ABIA will reach 15.1 million PAX by the end of 2021 (the 9-gate expansion opens by the end of 2018).

Any news on the "new" master plan being completed and released?

An interesting thing from that report, there was no month in 2016 with more passengers than the peak of 2015 (july). Page 4. Rather, the increase came from "flattening the curve" the other months (especially January).

I think that really shows that while the annual totals are useful for back of the envelope estimates, presumably ABIA won't really be "at capacity" in 2021.

More likely, as ABIA truly begins to approach the point where some months/days are near peak capacity, there will naturally be a process of demand management (airlines raising prices, people seeking alternatives on the busiest days, etc.)

That's not to say we shouldn't plan for growth, but we probably shouldn't panic and/or overreact.

No panic from me. I too agree with your assessment. There was a flattening of the curve in 2016. However, I do not think it is too conservative of an estimate to assume a 3%-4% annual growth pattern for ABIA. Even at 2%, the Barbara Jordan terminal would see the 15 million PAX reached during the calendar year 2026.

Another thing to consider...many, many companies curtailed business travel in 2016. I believe it may have been due (at least in part) to the economic uncertainty regarding the outcome of the Presidential Election.

It will definitely be interesting to watch ABIA's growth over the coming years. Does it actually flatten out? Was 2016 an anomaly? Will we see a return to monthly high single-digit or double-digit growth as experienced in recent years?

Apparently people have connected via Austin thru Alaska, as opposed to just Southwest (someone flew PDX-AUS-DFW). I forgot AA and AS codeshared, although that will end once Virgin merges with Alaska... Bleh. Dammit Alaska, you are nothing like Virgin to just acquire and swallow them whole.

Thanks!!!

Well, there is where you might see WN take more gates - as the ones being relinquished by Delta are adjacent to WN.

WN is Southwest for those who don't know that airlines have codes.

I had to look it up myself, because I don't have the codes memorized.
