WOW this place is looking great. Can't wait to visit it later this year. WOW, and this is just the start. 2, 3 and maybe 5 here we come (we all hope). 1 WTC is in the record books ladies and gentlemen.

Im assuming the light blue things at thee bottom of the base are cladding and if you look at the webcams looking at the north east side of the memorial is that base glass stacked into piles?

I have to agree and say I do think 1 WTC is cheating and the antenna will be ugly. At the same time given the cost of the tower and somewhat soft demand for office space, I have to say I understand the need to cut costs. I am hoping they at least light it up like the ones on 4 Times Square and One Bryant Park.

I noticed that certain parts of the mast are covered in steel while others are exposed. I think it would look 10x better if they covered the exposed lattice parts. It would also reflect better during the day and shine brighter at night. See what I mean:

^ The part nearest to the beacon and the two middle parts are completely enclosed.

Durst has said that the lighting of all 3 towers would play off one another.

Here's a look at that top piece again...

(ignore the radome, and you can see the antenna markings)

The bitter irony to me is that, if they do end up re-painting the antenna (to give it a metallic finish) whenever it starts to rust or just to maintain that style yearly would probably cost a lot more in the long term than just putting the damn radome enclosure back on because we all know the reasoning behind its removal.

I still don't get why they filled in the corners. Was there a specific reason for this or was it purely aesthetic?

I'm honestly tired of this render. It is overly simplistic, and I mean WAY too simplified. There are no completely round sections, the first two cylindrical sections in the render are actually eight sided plate with rectangular openings for transmitting equipment. The next section is square (likely tubular lattice), and the last before the beacon section is five sided, also with cutouts for equipment. The platform like pieces that jut out from the sides will carry the LED fixtures and are designed to hold up the now cancelled radome. I modeled the two eight sided sections already, minus interior ladders and platforms. They are available in the links below my messages. I just want people to know what to expect. Nothing against any one.

They will all be similar in the sense that they will all be uplit by color-changing LED fixtures, but I would say the actual appearance you should expect to see for 1WTC will be closer to the look of 4Times Square than One Bryant Park.

IK, Durst's plan is really shortsighted.

Completely devoid of logic. Not only is Durst making the maintenance more costly (if that ends up being the case w/ the antenna) but he's also jeopardizing the tower's official height.

All this is for $20 million...

What happened to David Childs making an alternate spire design? Did he just give up or something?

There is no alternative. This was made clear by Durst when announcing plans for the antenna.

Hopefully as time goes on and technology advances, they'll be able to renovate the antenna someday to improve aesthetics. Once the cranes are taken down, it'll probably be nearly impossible to add a radome enclosure in the future, and the only hope will be to rely on improvements in construction technology. I'm anticipating that this building will out-live the Great Pyramids, and it deserves so much more.
