There are such (supercommuters are a thing) but I took that statement as the round trip time. When you’re talking about the hours per day you’re getting back, it’s that total that you’re thinking of.

I worked with somebody who commuted to Austin from Waco everyday for several years. That cannot be fun.

I have friends who commute from Round Rock to Temple, which is about 45 minutes, or an hour and a half round-trip. I personally commute ~25 minutes. I work with a guy who lives in the Dallas area and works in Austin a few days per week but stays at a hotel. Still crazy. My commute is about as far as I would like to do, and it's still farther than I'd prefer.

Many at my work live in Killeen and commute to central east austin. Just because no one can afford the houses anywhere in the Austin area.

I had a coworker about 15 years ago who lived in Katy and worked in Westlake with me.

She was certifiably insane. It wasn't even a particularly good job.

I can't imagine how much she must have hated her life in Katy to do this every day.

I don't think that is unusual at all. I just moved here from NorCal and commuting from Sacramento to SF and back every day is common. It is a good day if it only takes two hours each way.

I had a 90 minute commute from San Jose to San Francisco before. I had to drive 15 minutes to a train station, wait for the train to arrive (Another 5-10 minutes) and then napped on the train for 50-55 minutes before finally walking 5 minutes to the office

But yeah, the Sacramento to San Francisco was pretty common too. Thank god we're in a WFH/Hybrid work situation now

Building Diagrams

It's been a while since I posted, I used to post a lot, but life has been wayyy too busy. I've noticed we are missing a lot of bldg diagrams on this web-site. I have no clue how to make any. Anyone have any tips?

I also remember we had a guy on here, went by "PRILLER" who used to do great 3D mok-ups of buildings plugged into a software that would show the impact the design would have on the skyline. He used to post views from many angles. I've always wondered what happened to him, as well as what software he was using.

One more thing...

Didin't we used to post the most up to date rendering at the beginning of each thread or am I imagining that?

There are so many buildings going up, it's hard to keep them all straight when reading updates.

(I'm getting old. haha)

I understand Priller moved away from Austin (not sure where) and no longer posts here. I believe he used a combination Google Earth and SketchUp. Google used to own SketchUp and their strategy was to integrate them pretty seamlessly as a single platform. They no longer own SketchUp and IMHO they do not work together nearly as well.

I don't remember, but this is a great idea I think should be adopted. But it's one more thing on the mods' plates.

TWIMC, last week I went to the DMV to get my license renewed. Turns out they now require an appointment. So I went online to make one but the earliest was a day after my license expired. So I went in today and was asked to show my birth certificate. Wtf,
I have no idea where mine is. So they sent me away again. I just ordered a copy from the vital records office in NY $68 and will be driving illegally until I get the certificate in the mail estimated to arrive September 1st. So my ss# and now expired license is not good enough to prove my age. So if anyone is needing to renew their license and has to do it in person, you will need to make an appointment and provide a birth certificate or passport.
Oh, and if you plan on refinancing your house, plan on forking over $650 to get an appraisal.

I was recently scheduling an appointment to get my learner's permit, and the soonest times available in the Austin MSA were in late June. I ended up having to drive out to Caldwell (the town, not the county!) to get a slot relatively soon.

You can do a lot of common stuff (like renewing vehicle registration) online or via their drivethru. The latter is actually pretty neat, they have vacuum tubes !

The Wet, Wild History of Aqua Thrill Way, Austin’s 1970s Water Park

https://www.texasmonthly.com/being-t...0s-water-park/

It may not have been safe, but it sure was fun.

The old waterslide is hidden among a thicket of cedars off the access road of Interstate 35. Draped across a hill above Boggy Creek, eight miles south of downtown Austin, the slide is covered in a tapestry of spray paint. A little longer than a football field—relatively short, compared to the structures of today’s water parks—the slide’s two parallel, concrete runs circle softly to the right, then veer more sharply left in a notorious turn. This steep bend occasionally left swimmers with concussions, and it’s still risky for the skateboarders and BMX bikers who sneak in to catch rides. Leaves and other debris—shoes, broken beer bottles, soggy pieces of carpet—intermittently cake the chutes that kids once swooshed down on foam pads. The pool at the bottom into which they splashed is now filled with soft silt, and the old pump house has been reduced to rubble. The path patrons trudged back up for another ride has long since returned to the woods, enveloped by a thicket of weeds and branches.

In the late 1970s, small, single-slide water parks like this one were novel, popping up across the country. Named Aqua Thrill Way, this slide opened in 1978 as part of a national chain with two other Texas locations, in Galveston and Corpus Christi. “It is a sport most Austinites have never heard of, much less tried,” wrote Joe Nick Patoski in an Austin American-Statesman story heralding the opening of Aqua Thrill Way and its two competitors: Wet Willie, off Ben White Boulevard, and Flowmotion, on South Congress. Patoski noted that “water-slides loom as the biggest man-made summertime activity since miniature golf.” The fad only lasted a few years, with all three slides closing by the early 1980s; larger parks like Schlitterbahn soon replaced them.

U.S. Supreme Court upholds Austin's ban on digital billboards

https://www.statesman.com/story/news...ds/7402483001/

A divided U.S. Supreme Court has sided with Austin in a fight over digital billboards — handing the city and Texas skyline preservationists a huge victory in a free speech battle that began in 2017 against two advertising companies.

For decades, Austin has prohibited digital billboards anywhere other than on the premises of the business doing the advertising. The city says the ban not only keeps drivers focused on the road, but also maintains the skyline's beauty.

Austin is far from an outlier in Texas; the prohibition exists in 90% of the state's cities.

In an opinion written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the high court said Austin's ban does not violate free speech and can continue.

...

It was not a total win for Austin: The Supreme Court sent back part of the case to an appeals court so a panel of judges can decide if the billboard ban survives a constitutionality test known as intermediate scrutiny.

Explore how Austinites fought to preserve Barton Creek greenbelt over 50 years

https://www.statesman.com/story/life...as/7311937001/

In April, Central Texas visionaries announced a proposal for a dreamy hike and bike trail called the Great Springs Project that would stretch all the way from Austin to San Antonio.

Part of that route would include the completed Barton Creek greenbelt and the partially completed Violet Crown Trail, which link up in Southwest Austin.

It won't be easy, if the history of the Barton Creek greenbelt is any guide.

Will Town Lake/Shoal/Waller Ever Turn Into a Swimmable "Beach"?

Maybe I've brought this up in the past, so plz excuse. With the emergence of AI and advanced filtration systems, could we ever see all our public waterfronts safe enough to swim in year round?

I've always drooled at the thought of a safe public beach at Auditorium Shores
