Recently, I had the opportunity to visit and spend four days in Atlanta. What I saw and did during that trip has left me with the impression that – at least on SSP – its reputation is rather overblown and is kind of undeserved.
Far too often on our forums, the city is derided for being auto centric and having excessive amounts of corresponding auto-oriented infrastructure and development. Yes, while that is indeed ever true, in no way is it limited or somehow unique to Atlanta, which is the picture individuals tend to paint here. Chiding on and on about such would be, in essence, to rag on the overwhelming, vast majority of American cities, for they share similar, auto-centric qualities and development patterns (unfortunately, I might add). Though, of course, that doesn’t mean the city is perfect, or that it isn’t deserving of criticism; to say that, I’d be lying to both myself and you all.
For all of its faults, the situation on the ground is not nearly as bad as one, judging from the image bandied around on the forums, would imagine. Visiting the city's many neighborhoods, I found heaps of cozy, village-like nabes hidden beneath canopies of trees; plentiful post-industrial-chic areas; and an existing heavy-rail transit system. Streetcar suburbs and industrial loft conversion are romanticized everywhere else, but why not Atlanta? And, sadly, HRT, is all too scarce of an amenity in this country - not the kind of thing you find in all cities. See, not all that bad, right? Finally, an abundance of new, urbanist infill, along with pro-urban ordinances, streetscape and transit development developments signal a willingness to rectify the city’s current nature. I like Atlanta.

I wrote the above in my photo thread, comprised of the photos I took around town. I thought perhaps the Atlanta forumers would like to see that SSP forumers from other cities can indeed visit and have nice things to say
Here's the thread in mention - perhaps a few of you can get a kick out of it. your opinions and feedback mean alot! : http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=186116
