New Westminster wants to dress up what will be left of the Front Street parkade after the city demolishes half of it.

The western portion of the structure is scheduled to come down early in 2015. Now council wants to put up a digital mural to beautify the eastern end of the parkade that will remain.

Council has endorsed a city staff report's proposal to install a mural on the south side's façade across from Westminster Pier Park.

"The mural would be composed of a support structure that could dually function as a safety railing, mesh fencing and two-art plastic disks to create a high-resolution pixilated image to be viewed from a distance," said the report. "The proposed large mural (approximately 660 by 25-feet) would transform the façade of the utilitarian parkade into an iconic image visible from Westminster Pier Park."

The report's author, Erika Mashig, told council the mural would be illuminated from behind at night by the new LED fixtures to be installed underneath the parkade.

Coun. Jonathan Coté said as a frequent visitor to Westminster Pier Park he was excited to see the proposal.

"It's a creative way to make a less-than-attractive structure more inviting," said Coté. When I look at this proposal it seems like a simple way [to make it attractive]."

Perhaps someone else can confirm but I heard that there were barely any speakers and hardly any opposition.

I was in Tsawwassen yesterday and there is some huge construction going on right next to the Splashdown Park. Does anyone know what is going on there? Isn't the outlet mall going to be built on the other side of the highway?

Well for the most part it is a "working man's" part of the metro and overall very blue collar. People tend to be a bit more inline with reality and not spoiled. Now of course there are still places around say Capitol hill and Deer lake park where there are populations of spoiled people who feel their rights are more important than everyone elses and they are used to throwing tantrums to get their way. Anyways my point is that the demographics in Burnaby are more "normal" with few extremes(i.e. you don't have as many privileged and throw away people, the two ends of the spectrum that cause these issues).

I thought it was because it was a mostly Chinese suburb and Chinese immigrants are more ok with large towers - and also want to live in them, as opposed to people of European descent who are more likely to see towers as less desirable than low density areas. Besides young people, of course, who just dream of owning anything in metro Vancouver.

Chinese are also culturally less likely to try to push around council/government like they do on the north shore/Tsawassen etc.

Generalizing of course, I'd love to live in a tower.

Can you give an example of such tantrum from these "privileged" people on capitol hill?

Not that part as much. Edmonds and East is pretty white. Asian immigrants are fairly ubiquitous, but that area probably has had less influx than the rest of South Burn. That being said I haven't lived there since I graduated from high school.

The first post in was talking about Burnaby in general. I lived in Burnaby in 1987 (Woodsworth St, next to the big graveyard) and it was different then too.

Compared to a decade ago the neighbourhood has changed a lot. Pretty much anything new build is majority Asian (HighGate, City in the Park, the numerous lowrise developments)

Just compare the opening graduating class of Byrne Creek to the most recent, there is a visible difference.

I think the lack of opposition for the project is due to the fact that the site is largelly flanked by industry (BC Hydro and Skytrain to the south), and low density rental stock to the North, East and West.

I've heard a lot of mumbling from people in New West (where its majority white), but they can't do jack.
