Compared to a decade ago the neighbourhood has changed a lot. Pretty much anything new build is majority Asian (HighGate, City in the Park, the numerous lowrise developments)
Just compare the opening graduating class of Byrne Creek to the most recent, there is a visible difference.
I think the lack of opposition for the project is due to the fact that the site is largelly flanked by industry (BC Hydro and Skytrain to the south), and low density rental stock to the North, East and West.
I've heard a lot of mumbling from people in New West (where its majority white), but they can't do jack.
