^^ I love that the survivor tree is first to bloom. There's a massive mobile crane up at the North tower pool this morning and what appears to be 10 trees prepped for removal ..Perhaps they're correcting ice/water damage from the harsh winter?

they are actually planting new ones not taking others out. Looks like they are going to complete the entire two rows on the north end of the memorial.

Hmm... Every rendering I've ever seen showed the "wings" of the oculus as free floating. Each wing independent. I noticed that as they now have 2 wings installed on the northwest corner, that there is a tubular rod connecting them together. I was hoping that this connector was just a temporary construction element (like the welded on plates for crane hoising) but I did some digging and unfortunately it seems like they're permanent.

I found these photos of a scale model used for wind tunnel analysis. Note the awkward bars running down the wings...

Source: University of Western Ontario

Further, it looks like there's two awkward transfer connector blocks midway through. with a number of cross braces between those two wings.

Compare these with the official renders:

I'm pretty bummed. How many billion of public funds are being spent and they can't even deliver what is promised?

Edit: I guess I'm a little late to the boat? I found this back from Oct 2012...

Fences Coming Down Around Memorial Plaza at the World Trade Center

By AMANDA WOODS
Posted May. 02, 2014

The intersection of West and Liberty streets, which will have open crosswalks this month. Pedestrians will be able to cross both West Street and Liberty Street at that intersection. Sidewalks along Liberty and West will be open and the fencing removed. Photo: Carl Glassman/Tribeca Trib

Quote:
In advance of the National September 11 Memorial Museum’s ceremonial opening on May 21, the fencing will come down around much of the Memorial Plaza, making for easy access to the site and the lines of visitors at airport-like security a thing of the past.

And for the first time since Sept. 11, 2001, pedestrians will be able to cross West Street at street level between the World Trade Center site and Battery Park City. Pedestrians will also be able to walk along Liberty Street, all the way from Broadway to West Street. Fulton Street from Broadway, however, will remain closed.

Later in the year there will be changes to the fence line on Vesey Street at Church Street that will provide additional space for the masses of pedestrians in that area to pass through.

Right you are. They've dropped about 20 trees into the NE corner of the memorial and I see nine trees on Greenwich awaiting planting.

Also, thanks for the update Hypo. This is as big of a milestone as any.

I can't wait for the fences to come down. I've got my reservation to the museum after work on the 22nd. I can't believe after all these years it'll be open in just over a week!

Before we know it the transit hall will be finished and you'll be able to walk from the WFC through to the Fulton Center.

Will the northeast quadrant of the memorial plaza open with the museum or remain fenced off? The diagram above doesn't really make it clear. The planting of new trees in this section seems to indicate that it will open, but...

AFAIK yes, it'll be open, but it'll be kind of a dead-end corner as the fence will be up between the museum and 1 WTC.

As I read: Anytime a Calatrava-designed building gets built, anywhere, you've got yourself an instant tourist attraction! Always worth the extra $ spent! As great architecture invariably pays for itself!

I went out of my way, on a trip to Chicago, 5 years ago, just to see Calatrava's Milwaukee lakefront Museum!

I outlined the current fence perimeter in red (please let me know if there is a glaring inaccuracy; it's obviously not perfect):
