Are these being required as part of new developments by the city? The amount of public urination by douchebags on a weekend is bad, hopefully this helps.

Sorry, last one. When the public toilets debuted in 2006. Each one cost $43K + $180K to connect them.

Quote:
Unlike in some European cities, where self-cleaning toilets are coin-operated, the Vancouver toilets will be free. That's thanks in part to a little-known B.C. law -- the Public Toilet Act -- passed by the NDP in 1975, which forbids charging someone to go to the bathroom.

The new toilets will join two existing underground city-run public washrooms at Main and Hastings and Victory Square.

Bob Ross, a former city engineer, has done consulting work for the city in the Downtown Eastside -- including toilet availability.

His "field work" last year included a count of all the human waste in downtown alleys.

"I just went down all the lanes in the downtown core and did a visual assessment of how much feces there was," he said. "And the next day I did the same thing to see how much new stuff had occurred."

His conclusion?

"What I found was [the problem] wasn't as big as you would think, based on the number of complaints and the smell," he said. "There's no question people are using the lanes as toilets. But I didn't find as much of it as I had expected."

The cinder block on the old parking garage had a lot of character.

*****

I noticed that the curb/gutter at the Richards & Robson corner is a few inches higher in elevation than the existing roadway - really awkward transition (like the sidewalk crossing of the alley between R&R and Atelier before they repoured it).

I think they'll have to repour that corner of the sidewalk to bring it down to grade.

***********

Pics by me today of the Seymour block

Note the gap on the right side of the pic - i.e. 2 (likely more) separate buildings hidden behind 1960s curtain wall cladding
(probably comfirmable by looking at the alley side)

There are no lights in the soffit (I don't think the panels light up).

If the retail bank turns its lights off at night, the sidewalk will be very dark along this stretch.

Watch your step! If we get a big rain that's going to become a small lake.

The pavement glass in front of the door on Robson is coming along quickly. I didn't catch it before the white panes went in so I have no idea if they will light up.

Thanks!
Maybe the white panels are lighting units and the remaining glass is the wear layer?

They could do some neat stuff with the large variety of cinder-block patterns available in the 50's and 60's. Many apartment buildings from that era around vancouver have some great designs made from such a humble material, sometimes highlighted with tiling, colour variations and lighting features. In the exterior stairwells of the telus parkade there were also single floating random glass blocks that were lighted from behind, it was very modern for a parkade. It was in terrible condition by the time it came down though.

The sidewalk looks like they may be repaving the street to bring it to the level of the new curbs from the way the new curb drain is integrated. Also if you look towards the centre of the intersection you can see the street level is higher, plus there's a temp. asphalt ramp right at the corner.

Nice!
Looks sleek in that shot
(and some will appreciate that the curved part doesn't look like a curve)

A "guy in a yellow vest" told me that the glass panels being installed in front of the doorway on Robson will light up.

More lights. I just spotted these lights under the overhang between the sections on the Richards Street side. I wonder if they will extend along the whole section and if the residents will have any control over them.

I would assume so, since they just appear to be on for one unit...

as for the super bright LED lighting feature, that might be a different story.

An update on the podium roof construction that I can see from my vantage point. And a pic on Richards Street.

The lane way is supposed to be paved with blocks/bricks as there are fibre optic and other lines underneath between buildings so if they ever need to access them, they simply pull up the blocks/bricks up for ease of accessibility.

Also occupancy permit has been granted now

Congrats to the new home owners
