Struck me as a weird thing for them to say... phase I is just as much part of WEM as phase III is. I'm sure Polo Park's numbers would be higher too if you carved out the food court. But judging by how many retailers make WEM one of their first Canadian locations, I'd say WEM is a pretty influential mall even if it doesn't rank in this list.

Not that weird a thing to say. Phase 1 is an amusement park and phase 4 is a movie theatre. Excluding the non traditional retail sectors from the mall would give a better idea of the sales per sq ft of the dedicated retail portion.

Being located in the same development is a different thing. For example Unicity has Sobey's, Walmart, Marks and Canadian Tire. That does not mean they are all the same company.

Canadian Tire, Parts Source, Marks and the Forzani Group mostly operate on the consumer facing side as completely independent. For example Sports Check doesn't hand out Canadian Tire money. The press releases also treat them as separate companies the majority of the time. A rare exception was the Olympic partnership that crossed banners.
there are two canadian tires stores in vancouver area that have marks inside them, well the two in particulat are three level stores mark has its own level but is connected to canadian tire, the fairly new CT in high level alberta has a marks at the back of the store, apparently they have problems with people leaving marks without paying and they can't pay at the canadian tire cashier so they have to walk all the way back

Phase I is actually a Polo Park-like regular size, two level retail mall that opened in 1981. It makes up a significant part of the overall retail floorspace of WEM. Phase IV has a theatre but there are also many retail stores as well.

Even if you included West Edmonton Mall on the list it wouldn't change much about the overall list. Polo Park and Laval would still be there and the distribution across provinces would be similar too.

Regarding the issues with the integration between Marks and Canadian Tire, that just further highlights how they effectively operate as completely separate businesses. For contrast look at Loblaws (Superstore) and Joe Fresh. There are completely free standing Joe Fresh stores out there. When you are at an integrated property you can pay in the Joe Fresh department or take it to the cashier with purchases from all the other departments. To the customer it is effectively just another aisle in the larger store. If you want to run multiple banners in one store you need to be like how Loblaws runs it, seamless to the customer.

Must be Southdale? It's the only Target location that isn't right by a Walmart.

It has been confirmed Walmart has taken over the former Kmart/Zeller/Target location in Southdale. That leaves KP, Brandon and the giant white elephant.

It won't be a super-walmart, not big enough. quite a large population with island lakes, southdale, windsor park no longer having to got o st.vital mall walmart. i had heard they were going to build new in sage creek, i guess not.

Look at that, two down in one week. Funny how the two most profitable spaces - Kildonan Place and Polo Park are the ones remaining.

Great news for Grant Park and Southdale.

"MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Walmart is buying 13 of the former Target Canada stores plus a distribution centre in Cornwall, Ont.

Walmart Canada says it will spend about $165 million for the leases and properties and a further $185 million on renovations.

One of the stores it takes over is in the Southdale mall in Winnipeg.

The $350-million plan is subject to court approval, as part of Target's exit from the Canadian market.

Walmart expects renovations to start in a few months and to employ about 1,500 trade and construction workers.

It also plans to hire about 2,400 people to set up and staff the stores and another 1,000 for the distribution centre.

One of the stores is in Winnipeg and the others are in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

That's quite the expansion for Walmart in Winnipeg. Two more South Winnipeg stores will have opened in a fairly short timespan. Probably not a bad idea for them given how constantly busy the St. Vital and Regent stores typically are.

Given how quickly 2 of the 5 Manitoba locations have been snapped up, I don't think it'll take that long for the others to fill... that giant white elephant is located in the single busiest shopping district in the entire province, so someone's going to want it. Northgate could be tricky, though.

As to wags' comments, there were rumours about a new Walmart closer to Sage Creek, and wasn't there a plan for a commercial development farther down Fermor east of Lagimodiere? If this means that one of those sprawling big box developments doesn't get off the ground as a result, then that's a win.

To me Northgate seems like a complete teardown and rebuild. There is lots of usable parking/space trapped behind the current building that was rarely used even when Zeller's was there. Even then which retailer would be willing to move into the space?

One could also say that Kildonan Place and Polo Park are also the two most built up (maybe even over built) retail areas of Winnipeg.

In the US Walmart has had huge successes with its smaller format "Neighborhood Market" stores and more recently their click and collect at those locations. Part of the format is having lots of points of contact really close to the end customers. There are no signs that Neighborhood Market is coming to Canada but they are inching towards click and collect with the pickup lockers starting the roll out. Granted that is far from ordering the families entire week's worth of groceries from a web site, pulling up to the pickup area and having an employee help load it into your car but we will get there and soon. The question is who jumps firsts Walmart or Loblaws.

It was essentially confirmed a week or more ago that the "new" store coming to Polo Park would be a Lego Store. This is just the formal announcement from the mall.

Little late to the discussion, but a CT in this location is the best news I've heard since I attended GP HS (mall wise).. I just love it, a reason to hit GP again..well other than cruise nites at the Pony Corral and the LC..

Interesting thought -- Canadian Tire usually isolates itself from retailers on either side. On one side is the large automotive shop which normally covers the depth of the store. On the other side is a similar sized outdoor garden center. At Grant Park Canadian Tire is going to have to run a different format. Even if they go back to the auto center on the east side like it was back in the Woolco days where does the outdoor garden center go?

It will be interesting to see how this one gets implemented.

If they tear down Northgate I hope they keep Cinema City. It's the only theater in the north end and the only second-run theater in the entire city. I enjoy going there even though the screens are smaller and the seats aren't as plush.

Be like KP's Canadian Tire store - auto bays in the front and the garden center on the side.
