Garbage along creeks in the GTA has multiple causes:
Poverty - ie tenants being evicted, homeless persons junk collections
Teenagers - those old video cassettes are probably a porn stash. I come across socks, underwear, condoms.
1950s-1990s rural property redeveloped - some farmers and property developers left their old houses abandoned and eventually they were knocked down w/ garbage left on site
SA dumping: it's sad but even in my apartment complex, many SA immigrants refuse to dispose their garbage, eg leaving it in the hallway rather than putting down the chute, throwing it off their balconies, or my neighbors simply storing it on their balcony. And now you see this in rural Ontario: Woolwich Dam has a 7.5km trail around it, just north of Elmira. I've been walking it for decades and literally since 2022 it's suddenly becoming a litter magnet, so much so the region has put up huge No Dumping signs everywhere. So who's doing this? Well, recently on a walk I came across a large group of TFW types tossing their fast food waste. FU!

In Northern Ontario and especially the Prairies, I associate this dumping problem with FN/poverty.

I am looking forward to my camping/hiking trip to rural Quebec and New Hampshire/Vermont, where locals respect nature and keep it clean.

I love passing through small towns. I wouldn't even know where to start if I went to Italy. So many to choose from dotting the landscape everywhere. Just endless.

Within the next couple of months I'll be visiting Peterborough, Kingston and Ottawa for work over three days. I plan on getting off the 401 at Cobourg and taking Hwy. 2 all the way to Cornwall to see all the towns along there I've never been to. And visiting a couple spots in Kingston I didn't have the chance to see last time.

Then I'll be seeing a few spots in the NCR I haven't seen before, or exploring them more. Neighbhourhoods on both sides of the border and Gatineau Park, which I've never been to before. Couple museums too and what not. I have a list I started compiling.

On the way back, I'll be taking Hwy. 7 to Peterborough and seeing all those towns and then the route back home from Peterborough is TBD as I've seen virtually everything I want to see between there. Maybe I'll pass by the giant buddhist temple west of there that just opened to the public.

Won't have much time for walking so will be mostly driving through. Though I will bring my retracable fishing rod and some tackle if I see a fishing hole.

Also thinking of visiting the lookout tower in the Thousand Islands and maybe crossing over to the US to try a gokart track I noticed on the map. I know I haven't been to the Thousand Islands as an adult. Not sure if I did as a kid. I know I went to Ottawa twice as a kid with the second time being 1993 because that's where I watched Joe Carter hit the HR to win the WS while the owners of the house we stayed at were sleeping. Had to jump up and down in silence.

Last time was in 2012. I walked along those falls I forget the name of. Visited the Museum of Civilization, Byward Market, Parliament (went up the Peace Tower too).

Brockville is quite nice and has that Old Canada, historic feel. Those falls in Ottawa would be either Rideau or Hogs Back. The latter are a tad off the beaten trail, so I guess it was Rideau. If you’re headed to Gatineau Park, just be aware that car traffic is only allowed, I believe, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

If you’re going to explore some of the central neighborhoods, just be wary of the parts of Lowertown that are not so great anymore. Byward Market is fine, but some of the surrounding streets, especially towards King Edward, are crawling with… colourful characters.

Lol, Ottawa's homeless pale by comparison to Edmonton or Calgary's hobos. Ottawa can feel surprisingly dead in most urban areas on weekends, I suppose as government workers flee to their cabins/cottages in Quebec, NY State and Eastern Ontario?

Brockville has a great historic district especially the homes north of the main drag; also Prescott, Cardinal and Iroquois have very different vibes from Southern Ontario and Cornwall was a big surprise, feeling more like Windsor really.

Now that you mention it, it was Hog's Back. I think I did that one because it was on the way back to the airport. This time around I might check out Rideau for a quick stop.

The not so great neighbourhoods I'm also interested in. But will drive through. Last year I took the bus purposely down Parliament St. in Toronto on the way back to the office from a site visit to get that experience. Colourful characters observed outside and on the bus. Will definitely walk Byward again.

Brockville is one of the towns I most look forward to. I have all the charming towns off 2 and 7 mapped out.

Thanks for the tips. I will probably post something on the forum again for some recommendations.

Cardinal is worth a quick stop if you're going past the 416 onward to Cornwall. Very unusual looking industrial town with train tracks and little canals that make the older part almost an island

And I'm hardly an adventurer.

I can't even get anyone to go fishing with me. Though, I am pickier nowadays with who I hang out or associate with. So that doesn't help.
I would always be available to "hunt" for objects thrown into the woods and try to build their story. Unfortunately we live on two different continents

Will keep in mind. I find train tracks, roads and canals built specifically for old industrial to be interesting. A lot of that where I am now is unused or is still used and is fenced off. For instance, when I'm on the GO train, I see tracks that branch off straight into a depot for some warehouse or whatever. I always wonder what it would look like for a train to branch off and go in there and see it being loaded. I tried to walk one of those tracks several weeks ago where it runs over a field for quite aways but was disappointed to see it fenced off despite it being nowhere near the active tracks.

Instead of driving South Service Road or Cornwall when I get off the QEW, I might drive the service road running along the Ford assembly plant just for the hell of it.

As for the waterways, when I see all those industrial ports in NYC with Manhattan in the background I always think how cool that is (montreal or Vancouver industrial on the water not so much as it’s not grungy enough to find that interesting). And every time I pass over the Skyway and look over Hamilton Harbour, I picture myself in a boat pulling up to the slips of some refinery and fishing around there with a blast furnace going off in the background. Would make for a very interesting fishing video.

Heavy or old industry adjacent to residential always gets me thinking if I'd ever live somehwere like that. Like living next to the GM plant in Oshawa. Or in the dirty part of Hamilton around the refineries, which is always an interesting drive. I find this area of Oakville interesting due to the contrast. It's not a hard border between industrial and residential since there's train tracks and a road separating the two, but on one side is old light industrial and train tracks with freight and passenger trains while on the other side is mansions and homes that start for probably no less than $2.5m situated in a tree canopy.

In Sicily unfortunately there is a lot of rubbish that is deposited where it should not be deposited and which is not collected but which should be collected and therefore (always unfortunately :furbo ) there will be many objects from the past to study. Instead, speaking of small towns in Sicily, Centuripe is one of the strangest looking towns. Located in the hinterland of Sicily, in the province of Enna, at 730 meters. It looks like a gigantic monster :fuggire:

Absolutely fantastic day today to play a round of golf, 26c and brilliant sunshine.

This is such a fun little course that runs right through an active apple orchard, the apple blossoms were popping off to make for a picturesque round.

15C and a mix of sun and clouds. Fully sunny this morning but more popcorn clouds (convective) this afternoon. We had some rain.

Low of 8C this morning.

The warmspot was Lytton, BC at 30.1C. First 30C day in Canada this year. It was about time. Usually we get it sometimes in April.

The warmest low was Entrance Island, BC at 12.2C.

Stellar day. Clear, sunny, dry.
The palm trees are flowering and the beach beckons.

Thursday’s high at Vancouver Harbour was 19 C, the low was 8 C.

Two more new ones this morning.

I've never seen a Canada Goose here, so I was wondering if it was a mistake. There's very little information online specific to this province, but there do seem to be enough different sources to say they do exist here, but we have no year-round population, and no urbanized population. Ours are still fully wild and live in barrens, bogs, moorlands, etc.

So the app was probably accurate, but the bird would've had to be just flying over and not stopping in town.

We have lots of Canada Geese here, and they are pretty domesticated, they venture into the city like they own it.
However it may be a subspecies.
