As for the new C-Train livery choices, I like the Mask the best. There's just something about that all white front end and how it matches with the black windows/window frame.

If I had to go with either Bow or Mask, I guess I'd go with Mask. Tough choice though.

Mask for me too. By far the best of the three!!

The new and significantly improved Chinook Station, by me.

Yep. They closed the station in early January, demolished it, and rebuilt it. Just reopened last week I think.

I am not familiar with that part of Calgary but just looked it up on Google. Do a lot of people actually walk from that station to the Chinook Centre mall?

The mall gets 15-20% of its business coming through the station. Why would that be surprising? It's only two blocks away...

There's also a plan to build an enclosed pedestrian walkway from the mall to the station, though that may be a stale proposal. There is also a free shuttle from the station to the mall and back, I've never taken it though.

I just went on Google maps and noticed there's a Brazilian Churrascaria in front of the mall. Now I'm hungry.

I don't dispute your figures. Just that looking at it on Streetview it doesn't seem like that nice a stretch of road to walk. Especially not in the winter.

I worked in the area and commuted to Chinook station for 4 months while back in Calgary for the summer. The area has a lot of potential for redevelopment but as it stands is pretty grim to walk around in, especially in winter. At around 500m from station to mall I'm actually surprised that figure is as high as it is. That is encouraging though!

I actually asked the question because my city is opening a BRT station in a few weeks right across from our main mall in this location (it's under construction if you spin around):

The mall is south of the station across that big boulevard. It's barely 200 m I think.

Its not friendly but it is what it is for now. Calgary is a city of 1.4 million, not 6 million, so we still have a long way to go as far as redevelopment goes. Macleod Trail is an absolute dumpster heap, but then again, Georgia in downtown Vancouver used to be auto dealership heaven if you can beleive it! They already have a site plan laid out for the area around Chinook Station and the area between it and the mall. The redevelopment of the station was the unofficial first phase i guess. In the not so distant future the stretch between the two will be low-mid rise condos with street retail apparently.

On another note though, I remember we were talking about average speeds of different rapid transit vehicles recently. I was riding the ctrain last night and looking into the drivers cabin at the end of the train and noticed the speedometer had maxed out at 80 km/h while we were still accelerating, and when we decelerated into another station, it took quite a bit of deceleration just to get it under 80. So maybe our vehicles are just supposed to go at 80 but have a max cruise of 90 or 100.

I have no reason to doubt your numbers as one thing I have noticed is that people will use transit and walk even before you make the conditions optimally hospitable for them. Cyclists are also like this as well. It says something about their determination - one that planners and other officials should take heed of more quickly.

Yeah for sure. I do think one day, the Chinook area will form into the "Metrotown" of Calgary. I believe it already includes one of the highest number of office towers outside of the greater Core. Lots of condos/apartments too. If this Chinook area plan goes through as presented, it should be a good step towards bringing this to fruition. I think they should even consider building sloped overpasses on both sides of 61 Avenue over Macleod Trail. By sloped, I mean just continue the sidewalks into overpasses, rather than having a huge number of stairs. The main problem with the accessibility of the mall from the station is that you can only cross Macleod on one side of the intersection, and the lights take for ever.

It looks like excavation for the new platform is almost finished, the huge piles of dirt that have constantly been in the corner are starting to shrink. (the pile would constantly be rebuilt as they dug more and more of the pit as it is where the extraction point was)

Another couple of Calgary regional transit updates.

Anderson Station expansion. The station is located 11 kilometers from the core. It was the original terminus of the South Line, now the line travels another 6 kilometers south.

Also, I believe this is my first time seeing the Airdrie Ice BRT. Very cool, it looked like quite a few people were on it too.

There has been some talk about trolleys and gondolas to bring people from the C-Train to the main part of the mall as well, but as the mall keeps expanding it may not be long until the mall itself crosses over McLeod and starts advancing on the CTrain station.
