That's the tricky thing with super high end custom homes... people with the money to buy it also have the money to do whatever they want to suit their tastes. It could end up being a bit like the big mansion at 1063 Wellington that was on the market for years at something like $11 million... did anyone end up buying it? Anyway, I believe that was the site of Izzy's old house before he moved into the condo and it was replaced by the current residence.
390 on the River condos has 4 penthouse units completely unfinished, bare concrete, roughed plumbing. Each is a half floor and could be combined with another unit like what Asper did at 1 Wellington for a two floors. The parking garage has a river view.

I looked up Robert Harris, Harris Transport,, he died age 69.

I still think tower cranes, large or small are a better choice. A similar building on Hargrave had a mini-tower crane. Especially those buildings on Broadway and Stradbrook could have used tower cranes.

The 390 penthouses have some spectacular views. If i was rich and looking for a condo, it would be top of my list.

And you can get them for a pretty remarkable deal as SCU just wants to be out of that project already.

Does anyone know what is under construction on Notre Dame next to the Portuguese Centre? It's a small but fairly elaborate-looking wood framed structure.

I've been curious about that one too. My lunchtime walks often bring me by there and I've never been able to glean any info from signage or whatnot.

'rona might have been the death blow for cinemas... with huge 4K TVs being accessible to anyone with at least some disposable income and streaming services delivering a vast array of movies right to your home, there may no longer be much of a reason for their continued existence.

Seems hard to believe as all the expensive parts of the theatre have already been built. All of the concrete risers have been installed an closed in....but who knows.

Lots of money pumped into it already including steel structure for seating areas, hard to believe anyone would walk away at this point.

Cineplex had a pending deal with Cineworld (a large EU player) to merger. The pandemic caused that deal (Cineplex was the smaller partner) to be withdrawn. Also the pandemic has really crunched the Cineplex cash flows (see dispute with the Northgate landlord). It seems very possible that work of the Kildonan Place theater has been "paused". I would guess that anything somewhat essentially will continue but once the space in enclosed all the interior work will be on hold and it will sit partially finished until they can proceed.

Cineplex moving to the new location in the mall is basically a predecessor for the second phase of the mall renovation which will demo out the old Dominion theater. That would seem to give the mall owner significant motivation to assist with making the transition happen. Also the mall desperately needs to keep the theater as a tenant as they are on the verge of becoming completely unanchored.

I am not a big movie goer even at the best of times (pre COVID), but I never found that the presence of others in a theatre enhanced my movie going experience, whereas say, it makes a tremendous difference for live sports. Also as alluded to be esquire, the quality of TVs one can purchase at fairly reasonable cost, plus blossoming streaming options (and rising cost of the movie-going experience at a theatre) really render the theatre to me at least, a bit of a dinosaur. Perhaps I'm way off base, and I hope somebody corrects me if so, but I struggle to see a robust business. It seems to be a niche product like vinyl music. Those who like it, love it, but the masses are happy to just consume in a different way.

Not really sure where you guys are coming from. I have a 75” 8K (not that there’s any content) tv. Surround sound. And still enjoy going to the theatre. It’s a different experience. Getting your popcorn. The previews. The darkened theatre. It’s a night out. Now that my kids are old enough to go they love it just as much as me. I look forward to being able to go out to the movies again. And I find more people make it a better experience. Everyone laughing together makes it different. Found that Saturday nights the theatres are still packed.

Movie theatre is a nostalgic experience for me. Smell of the popcorn. Maybe some pinball. Big screen in the auditorium. Also the screens are way bigger and audio more powerful than what any of us have in our homes. We usually get out once or twice a year to the theatre.

Growing up in EK, we went to the famous players theatre at KP all the time in the 90's. Our elementary school even had a partnership with the theatre to learn business. They'd come to the school and run through it. Kids would go to the theatre during the day and run a movie. It was fun.

The theatre there has been in the dumps for a while now. Was looking forward to the new theatre being so close to home. Hopefully every things picks back up and it get's finished.

Anyone know what's going on with the commercial portion of the Sterling Lofts? Seems to be a long time since residents moved in to still be all covered up. I also hope they replace that awning sign, it looks so run down.
