Yes, There last day open is this Wednesday. The staff says the new tenants of the CRU are going to be a Starbucks. Not sure if the nearby one will expand into space or close once the CRU space that Tip Top vacates is renovated. Although since it's located in the CBD I can imagine both being there with the long lines at the existing Starbucks and all.

Let's hope it's at least a Starbucks Reserve like the one on Main St. with adult beverages, and improved food offerings.

Looks like the cat is out of the bag. Yes Tip-top is closing.

Can't confirm or deny it will be replaced by a Starbucks Reserve.

Tip Top Tailors space is pretty big so I don't see why they would need both spaces. It's at least 3-4 times larger from their existing space.

starbucks is going big, they are opening a 43,000 sq ft store in Chicago in the Former Crate & Barrel store. Seems insane. But a decent size starbucks on granville would be nice, the ones down there already are always packed with long lines and no seating in the times i have gone in. I think most people go for the free wifi. It will probably do well. Sometimes you feel like your sitting in someones lap as you line up to order or pick up. A bit of breathing space would be nice.

Let that size sink in for a moment... one acre! Shows how little I know about coffee shop economics.

Also shows how little people in Chicago know about coffee.

Sorry couldn't help it here....

As for Starbucks replacing TipTop, hope that's not going to happen since they will be in direct competition with another Starbucks nearby, Tim Hortons, the welcoming and cozy Trees Organic and the very very nice and hip Quantum Cafe.

Not worried about Starbucks, more worried about the other local stores.

I've been a couple of times as it's really close to my apartment. The store itself is really impressive. It's a functioning roaster with a packaging assembly line inside. It's all open, so you can see the process of the production from ripe bean to it being roasted and then packaged. The food is a big step up in quality form your normal Starbucks which is nice.

I'd actually recommend going if any of you are in Shanghai. You don't even need to be a fan of Starbucks to find it interesting.

That wouldn't be too hard. Their present "boulangerie" food rebranding pretty much now consists of wildly over-sugared American versions of actual food.

Or you can also go to the original Roastery in Seattle.

Yeah. For Vancouverites, there's the original just a couple of hours away.

I've never been to the one in Seattle, but I guess I was commenting more on the sheer spectacle of the store in Shanghai. I didn't expect to be wowed the way I was. I just figured it was a really large Starbucks.

And this is how Starbucks managed to take over in coffee-snobby countries. Once they figured out that sugar bombs like frappuccinos have universal appeal, they were finally able to get in, and excel, in tough coffee markets like France.

Looking at the Shanghai video it looks to have an assembly/packing line and roasting equipment. So basically what would have been hidden away in some industrial park somewhere before. Perhaps you buy extra nice looking packing equipment and a more cosmetically appealing roaster

the Boulangerie is a company that they bought out a few years ago. It was a local San Francisco based bakery that had a number of locations in the bay area. So Starbucks bought them out, the guy who sold seemed to believe that the sale would help him grow his brand and bakery across the states instead starbucks just shut his stores down or converted them and started stocking boulangerie products in their stores, the sale included all the bakery recipes. Kind dirty tactic but thats what they do.
