MUCH NEEDED for this area. Making this a more walk-able area is critical in my opinion.

Thanks for posting, timbad!

I'll try to trek up to Oakland sometime this month.

In the mean time, can someone who is Wikipedia savvy try to update the following page?

I took some photos on Wednesday of the Key building (1100 Broadway) while I was waiting for my car to be serviced:

A surface parking lot at 1431 Franklin St. is envisioned for a 29-Story 314-unit apartment tower.

Quote:
Plans for a 29-story apartment tower to rise in downtown Oakland appears to be inching forward, with the project’s sponsor last week filing for an environmental review of the project proposed at 1431 Franklin Street.

The site, located blocks away from Lake Merritt, currently houses a surface parking lot. San Francisco-based real estate developer Tidewater Capital filed a pre-application for a 335-foot (102-meter) tall residential high-rise and parking podium in November 2019. Initial plans call for 314 units at levels seven through 29 within the tower, along with 176 parking spaces on levels two through five and a ground floor lobby.

The pre-application for the project is currently under review by Oakland’s Planning Department.

If approved, the Franklin Street project would be one of several new residential and office towers proposed, approved, or wrapping up construction in Oakland, including a 206-unit, 20-story apartment tower at 1700 Webster Street; a 633-unit, 40-story apartment tower at 1341 Franklin Street; and a 307-unit, 37-floor apartment tower at 1750 Broadway Street.

I like option A because of the outdoor terraces.

I don't really like the design of B

Definitely option A--it's taller and better looking.

I like A as well (well I like the design of A, I like B for additional housing).

(btw, I'm relocating to the Bay Area right after Labor Day, most likely to Oakland, so I look forward to hopefully seeing this empty lot developed!)

Welcome to the Bay! It would be REALLY nice to have another set of eyes in downtown Oakland and possibly another photographer! I'm all the way down south in San Jose so it's lightweight a trek to go up to SF and Oakland

Oakland's LakeHouse Commons secures FHA loan, plans 2020 groundbreaking

Quote:

The developers behind Oakland’s approved 361-unit LakeHouse Commons say they have secured a federal loan and expect to break ground on the long-awaited project in the fourth quarter.

The team, a joint venture by UrbanCore Development LLC and National Real Estate Advisors, received HUD approval May 15 for the $134 million 220(d)(4) construction and permanent loan to build the project's market-rate component, a 270-unit apartment project on a one-acre, city-owned site at East 12th Street and Lake Merritt Boulevard. The loan is being administered by Gershman Investment Corp.

The 26-story tower, which includes 18 workforce units and an underground parking garage, will rise over a two-story podium. It is expected to cost about $232 million.

The project also includes a 91-unit affordable building, which will be developed by the East Bay Asian Local Development Corp. at an estimated cost of $65 million. The development team said it has secured funding for the affordable component through private and public sources.

Completion of the podium and both buildings is expected to take 28 months. Clark Construction is the contractor; the architect is AVRP Studios, Architects.

I accepted a job offer. I had applied for the same type of position here in Chicago, as well as both Seattle and the SF Bay Area (it's in Fremont but not BART accessible), and was offered the CA position. It's a great job opportunity so Bay Area here I come! Since it's in the East Bay, it makes sense to live in the East Bay. And since I've lived in relatively urban walkable environments for the last 13 years, I'm focusing on Oakland rather than Fremont (which is fine but I much prefer a more walkable urban environment, hence Oakland is the best option in the East Bay).

^^ Well, good choice! Oakland has honestly changed A LOT in the past 10 years. Their downtown core is continuously evolving but unfortunately, we don't have many eyes there compared to SF and SJ.

Definitely check out:
- Lake Merritt
- Jack London Square
- Alameda (Downtown or grab a drink around Rock Wall Wine Company)
- Walk around UC Berkeley like a student
- Indian Rock Park in Berkeley (Safe area)
- Grizzly Peak (part of UC Berkeley Campus. On top of a hill)
- Go around Marina Park in San Leandro

If you need anymore places to check out, I have A TON! Also, I'm not sure how it's like in your area of Chicago, but do not leave your belongings in your car. There has been a spike in car break ins in the past 2 years but it kinda slowed down cuz of covid. Just a heads up!
