Is this one still expected to break ground in 2018?

I like the black grid cladding. I just wish it took up more surface area and turned this into more of a black building than just another blue box. It's hard to tell how much that texture will come out from the renderings. But what we really need in Austin right now is more facade differentiation. As much as we all love the building boom we have going on, we're at risk of having a skyline that's very obviously from a certain era and thus prone to looking dated in the future. I'm not against the growth in blocky, functional towers, but the least they can do is start putting more thought into the facades of these so that they don't look like they were all built at exactly the same time as part of the same construction project.

Also, it does pair relatively well with 300 Colorado.

Oh man I guess they are just hoping for the "participation" trophy.

I actually am quite happy with this new proposal for a few reasons:

The width of it compared to the older proposal does both a better job of filling the glaring gap between the W and the Colorado Tower, as well as obscuring the basic-as-all-hell Indeed building at 5th and Colorado from the lake, which nobody needs to see. Also, the black grid does do a bit to set it apart from other towers under construction...it's not just a glass box, and the parking garage is one of the best obscured by/blended with the design of the overall building.

There's also the fact that this being switched to office speaks to the strength of the downtown office market, with several new towers, like 405 Colorado, Block 71, and Block 185 moving quickly towards construction. That being said, the design of the residential tower here left a lot to be desired IMO.

What's key is that apartments/condos not going up here means another project with a better design may now rise elsewhere, as the demand for downtown living is pushed to other projects and further swelled by these office towers exploding the job market in the area.

It's just one of the next wave really

December at last word as far as I know. But big projects always get delayed, so I'm guessing early 2019.
They have a demo permit already that was approved for Ver. 1.0. So the start of Demo would be a good indicator of a groundbreaking coming soon.

I agree pretty much entirely. That's what makes NYC and Chicago have the best skylines out there, and what (in my mind) makes Dubai's skyline so boring. They have skyscrapers from a dozen different architectural eras, whereas Dubai has all 50 gigantic buildings all being hypermodern.

Yeah, it's pretty boring. I liked the residential proposal better. The unfortunate thing is it's going to be fairly prominent on the skyline because of where it is. I was hoping for something with a little more facade variation and detail. I also wonder how they'll light it. The Colorado Tower across the street already lights its mechanical screens with flood lights. Doing that here would just be redundant.

I like it a lot better than the residential tower. Mainly because the parking podium is well hidden and blends in perfectly with the rest of the building. The window mullions have an interesting pattern and expression (fairly basic still but certainly more interseting than all the other glass towers going up around the area).

I think the only thing that can be lit is that silly little notch. At the risk of being overly repetitive, the one thing that can save this is 20 more floors. But then again, it would just be a taller version of MEH

Anyone want to photoshop 600 Guad, Block 71, Avenue, ZaZa, 5th and Lavaca, 5th and Brazos, and 400 Colorado in to the picture? Just so we know what we’re dealing with?

I was gonna post a snarky remark about plateaus, parking garage skyscrapers and blue boxes but its not half bad with nice street interaction.

Sources told me that Holder Construction has this project and bids are due this Friday.

I don't have any info on start dates, though.

ABJ lists this one at 32 floors and 355ft. 14 floors of parking.

Here's the ABJ story. The 455' is the only height referenced in the Design Commission backup file - except in the elevations which have it as 446'.

Yikes, guys. Considering how prominent it will be in our skyline, you'd think they'd want to do something with it that makes it unique. There's nothing Austiny about this building at all.
