The sprawling gothic complex perched on the hill is the former Royal Victoria Hospital, now relocated to the MUHC's west-end mega-hospital. McGill is in the process of acquiring the buildings.

Le Peterson really adds density to its surrounding... I can't believe how close it rises to its smaller neighbour to the east. You'd be able to jump from the balconies of one to the balconies of the other.

I think orange is Edmonds. New West would be on the other side of the "ridge" running down Burnaby and Vancouver so not visible from this vantage.

CN Tower looks awesome in that pic. For a while it seemed a very dated building to me, but it's aging like fine wine and helps that so much has grown up around it.

Almost no surface parking lots! That's pretty impressive.

I notice there's a big parking building (a few stories) in the middle of the pic (leftish side), which I suppose suffices to serve the entire downtown, a smart idea.

Does Victoria have other incentives and measures to make sure people won't want to keep parking lots, like special taxes, etc.?

Smaller than it actually is, yes, but the skyline still looks pretty darn big.

Mountains will do that.

It's also interesting to see all the fall colours in the foothills. You don't often associate Calgary with fall colours but they look quite stunning.

Edit: just noticed something else that would contribute to this effect in the picture. Calgary is much longer and skinnier than it is wide. Edmonton is basically a squarish blob whereas Calgary is restricted by the Tsuu T'ina nation SW of the city and so is stretched out vertically. Because of this when you look east or west of DT the distance to city limits isn't that big (probably 18 kms). From DT to the southern limit of the city though is 30+ kms and to the north it's a little less but still pretty close to 30 kms.

Not only is it solid on the street, but there's a bunch of back alleys and courtyards filled with shops. It's neat how they pack a whole bunch into every crevice downtown.
