I was just in Niagara Falls running the 2011 Niagara Falls Marathon...anyway, second visit to the city so this time I got a chance to look at the real downtown/central city that's behind the Casino, Skylon, Ferris Wheel, Hotels...I'm no expert, but is that really a skyline of Niagara Falls, or is it more window dressing mostly consisting of entertainment and tourist venues? The actual downtown, to me, didn't look too hot...pawn shops with bars on the windows, not many people walking around on Erie Street (I took the train to and from Windsor); so not going into a lot of detail but am I correct in assuming the main industry here is tourism, low-wage jobs? Similar to Windsor, if it weren't for those casinos, we'd be in big trouble. It's evident when you look at the classifieds and see how cheap it is to live in Niagara Falls, Windsor, Thunder Bay & Winnipeg...but they seem like cities where a lot of people are there because they could never afford Vancouver, Toronto, etc...has this been the reality for a long time?

Wow, that is pretty insulting. Did it ever occur to you that people might actually WANT to live those "cheap" (and by responding to the topic in this thread, you also basically called them "ugly") cities by CHOICE, rather than Vancouver, Toronto, etc.?

I have lived in both Calgary and Vancouver, and CHOSE to move to Winnipeg several years ago, despite not having employment secured or any friends here. I came for the grit, the art, the rock'n'roll, and the kick ass architecture. Turns out there's also amazingly gorgeous gals here as well, and hence I'm still here....

I know more people who have moved to Thunder Bay from Toronto than the other way around, but more who moved to Vancouver than from Vancouver. Most people that I know from down east came here because they were tired of dealing with the stress and smog of suburban Toronto. This city is cheap enough that you can make it your official residence while still using Porter to visit the city (or even work there) on a regular basis, and many people do that.

The sad part is, this is the tallest in Ontario outside of Toronto and Mississauga.

I know there was an ugly Canada thread floating around the forum somewhere but I can't find it. So in honour of it I decided to start a new one. Now the focus of the last one I seem to recall was very heavily weighted against brutalism of the 60's / 70's. Perhaps this time around we can see what hideous crap there is from the last 3 decades.

If you really want to see ugly just drive (or streetview) away from the river on route 116/St. Louis St. from the corner of St. Georges (or Victoria Ave.) in Longueuil, take the exit at Cousineau, turn right, and then turn right again on Montée Saint-Hubert (heading back in the direction of the river). When you reach Grande-Allée turn right again (although left is quite ugly too!)

I would wager that for an area built mostly before the 1980s, Longueuil/Saint-Hubert have the ugliest buildings in Canada.

I have still never been to Cross Iron Mills and never want to go. I have driven around the parking lot, but it pissed me off so much I wont go back. They literally makes you drive around the whole thing just to get it.....FAIL.

The older part of Liberty Village is great - converted warehouses that are actually you know, offices. Almost everything east of Atlantic Ave is garbage though. And the bars there are terrible.

As boring as this is, at least it uses real brick. In Calgary we mostly see shite with vinyl siding like this:
