CC's has the drag show on Sunday night; probably the only gay bar that's likely to be busy then.

Good All! -

I'm going to be in town from Sept 09th thru to the 13th, partly to participate in the Portland Dragonboat Festival, but partly to check out the eating, drinking, and general city in itself. I'll be with my girlfriend and a couple friends and we'd greatly appreciate some good ideas for coffee's, breakfasts, lunches and dinners as well as a few things to check out. We aren't much on the "attractions" persay but want to check out the heartbeat of the city, see what makes it tick, the notable spots locals frequent etc, any idea, inputs or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

On the drive back we are also considering heading out to the coast and meandering back, any suggestions of routes to take, places to stop along the way?

Cheers

E

MusicFestNW is also running from the 7th-11th, if you're interested in live music.

I am planning to come to Portland from Vancouver, BC for the Thanksgiving Weekend. We have family there, but the main reason I am going is to partake in your Black Friday special. Here during our big shopping day (Boxing Day, the day after Xmas), I take our Skytrain system and shop at all the malls that are right next to the train station (there are like 8 or so malls right next to a Skytrain Station).

I was hoping to take the MAX all day and just shop. I am familiar with the MAX within the Free Zone (not sure if it'll be free or not when I am there, but whatever) but not really outside of it. I do know that Cascades Station is where IKEA, Target, Best and other big box stores are located. Any other Stations I should check out? Is your big outlet mall accessible by MAX?

The big outlet mall, in Woodburn, is not on any transit lines that I know of. The day after Thanksgiving can create a several mile long wait on the I5 to access the mall's parking lot. I hear there are good deals to be had there, but I've never wanted to deal with the congestion.

The Gateway stop has Kohls and Fred Meyer.

Lloyd Center is in the free rail zone for the MAX, and that will still be there (probably).

We have two light rail systems: the MAX and the smaller Streetcar. The streetcar is proposing to no longer have a free section. I haven't read anything about the MAX taking that away, but one never knows.

In my experience, the best Black Friday deals are at national retailers, which means big box stores and malls are the way to go. So, taking the MAX from Pioneer Square mall to Lloyd Center, then to Fred Meyer and Kohls (in Gateway), then to Cascade Station (Target, Best Buy, etc) would be a more or less straight line, transit wise. Buy an all-day MAX ticket and you're set.

If you happen to visit the Pearl District while in town, swing by my website (by hobby) about the Pearl: http://pearlhelp.com. Thanks!

Hey, I'm not technically "visiting" Portland, but rather I just moved here a few days ago. Before I got here, I came up with a list of potentially interesting spots to shoot, and I'm wondering if the area around Burnside Skatepark and NE Martin Luther King Blvd is safe for a guy walking around with camera gear on his back. I didn't have any problems in the Pearl or Downtown, but the area around Burnside Skatepark looks a bit gritty just from what I've seen on Google Streetview.

^LOL, not at all. It's industrial, but I walk through the CEED all the time, no issues whatsoever. Sure the skatepark is "gritty" but it isn't at all dangerous. The skaters and bikers are actually friendly to "out of towners." Stop by Produce Row Cafe for a sandwich!

Welcome to Portland!

Safe enough for single young women to cycle through late at night. Check out city liquidators when you're there. that part of town is even safe late at night, see the Montage.

That's good to hear. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Portland once I get a better feel for it. So far, I've mostly just stayed within a few blocks of the 6th Avenue Transit Mall.

Just Saying Hi - From Austin

Hi all,

We [guy, girl, 11 mo old daughter] just moved up from Austin where I read this board pretty frequently. Austin's a hot, exciting market when it comes to new projects, most of the time with some vertical density. Hope to hear of exciting things happening in PDX also!

We're living in Corbett-Twilinger-Lair Hill.

Open to any suggestions about things to go see/do that will make us feel like we never left downtown Austin (other than the heat)

Cheers y'all,
Jonathan

Welcome to town!

What prompted the big move?

Also i would be more than happy to offer up some destinations to remind you of home, however i have never been to Austin so i dont quite know what that would entail (some sort of cowboy-hippy fusion establishment?). Anyhow maybe offer up some of your interests and we can go from there.

I've never been to Austin, so can't really suggest anything that might remind you of home, but being that we live in the same hood I can URGE you to check out BambooGrove Hawaiian BBQ. My fave restaurant in PDX so far. Also the Corbett Fish House is delicious if you're into fish/chips

Welcome to pdx! A good friend of mine is actually planning a move to Austin next spring, and I have been contemplating a way to spend part of the year down there and most of the year here, so I'm interested to see your thoughts on comparing the 2 cities

Former Austinite here. You'll find that Portland's not quite booming (yet) like Austin currently is. Austin's out of control these days! Hope y'all got your Tex Mex fix before you moved here; there's no such thing as Tex Mex in Oregon, despite what anyone may tell you! ;o)

There's:

Casa Del Matador http://matadorseattle.com/location/east-portland/

Cactus Jack's https://plus.google.com/112812058496739184105/about?gl=us&hl=en

Lacalacacomelona (for traditional Mexican, veggie and tex-mex) http://www.lacalacacomelona.com/

Neustra Cocina (Central Mexican) http://www.nuestra-cocina.com/

Esparza's (Used to be more authentic but has been northwesternized)http://www.esparzastexmex.com/

Podnah's http://podnahspit.com/

Porque no? http://www.porquenotacos.com/

Happy Sparrow (for Kolaches) http://www.happysparrowcafe.com/

Reo's Ribs http://www.reosribsbbq.com/

La Sirenita http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/24/282002/restaurant/Alberta/La-Sirenita-Portland

Miss Delta (Southern/cajun) http://missdeltapdx.net/

Le Bistro Montage (Southern/Soul, Cajun/Creole, Drunken late night bar grub) http://www.montageportland.com/

Just to name a few and there are tons of food carts and BBQ joints ta boot! And Hillsboro Oregon (Portland suburb) has a large Hispanic/Latino community so its worth exploring for restaurants.
