Yeah, I live right there and this will definitely help. I went to Clemson and have seen in city campuses such as NYU, Northeastern, etc. and GSU needs the connectivity these improvements will bring. Now, if they could just do something about the homeless in Woodruff park we could be on to something...
Also, I will be going to the groundbreaking for the basketball facility at GT on April 9th. I could post pics if anyone is interested.
GSU has had huge signs up advertising the Decatur St improvements for years. It's nice they're finally showing Atlanta that the Main Street Master Plan is more than a pipe dream. Re: Homeless in the park, is there anything besides long term gentrification that could make it less enjoyable for them to chill here all the time? Maybe the city could deed the park to GSU and then the campus police would be more licensed to give them a hard time. It's so crazy that the main homeless congregation is right in front of the GSUPD headquarters. Anyone have any clue on the technical details of legally kicking people out of public spaces?
Balfour Beatty Construction has laid off eight hourly employees and several engineers and assistant project managers who were working on the Streets of Buckhead project.
Jeff George, vice president of the company’s Atlanta commercial group, said the layoffs were due to construction delays on the Ben Carter Properties’ project.
“We’re trying to manage Ben’s money as best we can,” said George. He hopes to rehire the workers when progress resumes on the site.
The Streets of Buckhead is a massive redevelopment of the west side of the Buckhead Village.
Work on the $650 million first phase of the project has all but stopped as Carter renegotiates contracts with contractors and works with retail tenants, such as jeweler Van Cleef & Arpel, on when to open. It could be as late as fall 2010, he has said.
Last week Carter also said contract renegotiations netted about $10 million in savings, mostly because raw material costs have plummeted from their peak two years ago.
George, who is in charge of building the project, said a fall 2010 opening date is still feasible. The large construction cranes on the site will remain. He added that Carter is current on all payments.
“This job’s going to happen,” said George. “I’m convinced this job will move forward. There’s no doubt in our minds.”
Carter has scaled back plans from his original projections. Current plans call for luxury retail shops, upscale restaurants and apartment towers in the neighborhood that was once known as a popular party district.
This Thursday (April 2) construction will begin on Decatur Street that will signal the beginning of an important street improvement project to the Georgia State University campus.
I was watching WSBTV today and they mentioned the Westin replacing the windows. Then they said something about a renovation. Does anyone else know anything about this?

I heard this last night, but don't recall anything about a renovation. They did mention that they would be starting a complete replacement of every window starting at the top of the building and working down. It starts soon and should take about a year.

to confirm: they are replacing the entire glass curtain wall, they will start in June.
I can tell you they have not started anything; perhaps this will get going over the weekend. I will keep you posted as I am a student there and walk thru that area quite often.
The fact that the GSU Decatur St project is taking off now is pretty good news, especially after the switch in University presidents. A lot of GSU's expansion in the past was the old presidents doing, and this project getting off the ground (hopefully) shows that the new president will continue that legacy.
Also, it looks like they're sexying up the pavements around the new science block. 2 lanes of Piedmont have been blocked off right next to State station

Wow. I wonder if insurance came through on that one.
The person they interviewed said it was an Atlanta landmark and will always be one, so insurance or not, it's getting a face lift...and from what I understand...from the top down. It should be interesting to watch.

They're adding a SECOND coat of DARKER paint on the Atlanic, plus some brownish accent lines. Looking better now.
Had a lot of jetstreams going that day.
