Notice how when they list all the new nonstop destinations added last year, they left out Northwest's daily nonstop to Indianapolis that was added in May. That's because NW has already cancelled that flight. I'm not sure when it was discontinued, (sometime in January, I think) but it's gone now - as well as NW's nonstop from SAT to IND.

And speaking of Northwest which is merging with Delta - according to the Austin Business Journal in an article about Delta giving up 170 gates nationwide it noted:

The consolidation will not mean a loss of gates at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. a spokesman for the airport said. Delta currently operates out of gates 5 and 6 at ABIA. Northwest operates out of gate 3 and gate 4 has been empty. The merged operation will occupy gates 4, 5, and 6, leaving gate 3 vacant.

One of the things that has to be done before they can build more gates off the end of the east concourse is refurbish the tarmac down there and relocate some of those buildings off the east end of the terminal. When I flew out of ABIA in January, I noticed that go-cart track is gone and is a parking lot again.

If you go to the go-cart track's website it says :

WE'RE MOVING!
Iron Rock Raceway is temporarily closed. While no more information is available at the moment, please stay tuned to the website for more details

That leads me to believe that the tarmac reconstruction may be getting underway soon.

Well deserved, (and as an aside, Houston brand new Hobby came in 4th, just behind AUS, very good for Texas, as US airports don't normally do so well in these rankings).

Texas, as a whole is blessed with great overall air service, and 3 major airlines HQs.

The ball is already rolling on the planning and design for the CIP. It’s a $500 million project which is expected to be complete in August 2012.

Future expansion projects will be triggered by estimated demand and shall begin their respective planning, design and construction phases 5 years prior to reaching the trigger MAP.

Expansion Trigger Points (assumes ~4.11% annual growth beyond 2012):
-Planning Level I (Current CIP project) – 11 MAP (estimated to reach this level in 2012).
-Planning Level II – 13.2 MAP (estimated to reach this level in 2017-2018).
-Planning Level III – 18.4 MAP (estimated to reach this level in 2027-2028).

Therefore, Expansion Planning, Design, and Construction Should Commence:
-Planning Level I (Current CIP project) – late 2008
-Planning Level II – 2012-2013
-Planning Level III – 2022-2023

Interesting... Talk about a huge airport if it ever gets to full build out stage.

Good to see that there is a contingency plan in place for demand...but I don't see a full build-out at ABIA happening until any combination of necessary factors fall into place.

-a stabilized economy (ha!)
-an airline hub to occupy a full terminal alone (Jet Blue, maybe Frontier though unlikely etc)
-increase in int'l flights to warrant an upgrade from the South Terminal.
-Austin's raised status as a destination/tourist point/continued and rapid growth in residential/commercial sectors

I think at least 3 out of the 4 that you mentioned will happen and I think that is part of their long term planning goal.

Speaking of international service, it looks like Vivaaerobus no longer flies between Austin and Monterrey.

If you go to the schedules page on the South Terminal's website, no flights to Monterrey are listed after March 22.

Monterrey is no longer shown on the route map either.

The Cancun and Puerto Vallarta flights are still operating twice a week and are supposed to increase to five times a week during the summer.

On the domestic front, Southwest is dropping one of its 2 daily flights to Orlando effective August 16

I don't know for sure maybe somebody on here does, but I would assume they would have to have room for another large runway I mean I don't see how they could ever build out to final phase with just two runways for that many gates.

That is a bummer. I heard the flights were fairly full, but then the economic bust, escalating violence in Mexico and then the swine flu thing came along... not sure if those were the primary reasons, though, as the business model was somewhat questionable. Pretty sure the demise of VivaAerobus was predicted upthread somewhere... Still, we've seen this so many times -- international service started here and then stopped shortly afterwards. I was really hoping it would stick this time.

VivaAerobus is not going away, they are just pulling out of Austin.
They are looking to fly MTY-LAS and some other US routes later on.

The load factors on their CUN flights were horrid for some time.
