The street you see is Military Road. It's probably taken, I would guess, from the Basilica? Somewhere high up in that general vicinity, anyway. It's facing north toward Southcott Hall (the tall building) and Quidi Vidi Lake to the left.

You're basically looking at the northeastern edge of old town St. John's. Downtown is just to the right of the photographer.

The streets are the same, but the buildings have changed for the worse. Luckily, the REAL eyesore in this shot (the abandoned Newfoundland Telecom Building) is being converted into MIX Condos:

It is the riot after the first world war in the grips of the great depression that effectively ended our independence throwing us "Temporarily" into direct control from England again.. It was only suppose to last a few years then the second world war broke out and extended it for much longer .. then the reforendums happened..

Oh man! So much 'urban renewal' in St. John's it seems. What a shame, it could had been Atlantic Canada's Quebec City!

Yeah, it really irks me. Luckily we still have a sizeable old town core. But we did lose some impressive parts of it.

Quite a lot of it is still in tack, just a couple of sore spots

Most streets downtown you could imagine people walking down the street in 1800s clothing and horse and buggies bustling around

it's particularly charming during christmas

Here's just a little additional info. Yes that would be from the Basilica tower, looking northeast (towards the ocean which is behind the hills) - you meant the Eastern edge of downtown. The photo shows Southcott Hall under construction which would date it around 1963.

That is where Atlantic place is now on the right, foreground, and Scotia Centre on the left but out of the photo, the building on the corner with the bay shape was replaced by a modern one in the 50's or 60's, the closest building on the left is also replaced.

These old "skyline" vistas are quite something. I'd love to go back to those times via time travel and just stroll by the streets of the metropolis. I must have been quite a pastoral experience mirrored by the sense of great things to come....

I thought it was only the Oldest Santa Clause Parade but according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus_parade it is the longest running annual parade. Not bad for a country that is so young as ours.

Impressive indeed, but that wiki article claims this, but does not cite any reference.

I'll do some digging, because I know I've been to towns in Europe and Argentina where they had annual parades that were well over 150 years old!
