I guess the Oilers won't go quietly into the night. Want the Canucks to play the Oilers in the first round. We seem to play well against them.

A solid game (1st) by the Oil against the Sharks and then mailed in the rest, with a nice SO for Skinner.

LA is going to be a real test and should be one helluva game.

Ilya Samsonov providing perhaps the worst goaltending I've ever seen. It's gotten to the point where if he makes any kind of save it feels like a victory. Pucks are going in from every possible angle and in every possible way. He is seriously starting to hamper the Leafs. They have been outscoring opponents when he's in net but that is not sustainable and is now costing games. Allowed 6 goals on 21 shots last night.

How terrible has he been?

Save % this year...

Jack Campbell .873
Ilya Samsonov .862

We could probably package Campbell back to you.

If not for Jack's contract, I would do that, the 2 of them straight up. What does either team have to lose in that case? But if Edmonton wants to eat a large chunk of that contract, I'd do it. These 2 guys are a mystery, maybe a change of scenery would do them both good.

At this point there's no reason the Leafs can't call up both Marlies goalies and let them have a go for a while. If I were a GM or coach I'd have a revolving door of about five goalies through the season unless one or two clearly stand out. But sports executives are too scared to be unconventional like that. We've clearly seen plenty of SC winning goalies that basically came out of nowhere.

In recent years Soup, Sparks, McIlehny and Reimer had good seasons right after joining the Leafs. And other than the latter, they weren't around for much longer.

Ilya had a good season last year, but not this year. He's costing us points. Time to call up whoever is on the Marlies and let it ride until Woll comes back. If Woll starts dipping then share the workload even more.

What an odd game, but a W is a W!

The Oilers had no shots 10 minutes in, 2 after 1 and what about 5 after 30 minutes and somehow push the game into OT/SO.

Skinner looked very, very good, but man L.A. is an incredibly talented shutdown type team who can score quickly and with serious depth.

While improving, this is still going to be an incredible uphill battle just to get in.

37 x 5!

71 x 2

Pickard looking very solid and a good team effort once again.

Best team in the league since late Nov.

The Oilers' record on New Years' Day this season is very similar to the past three seasons, so I'm not too worried about not making the playoffs (knocks on wood).

...and with that Canada is out of the WJHC.

---

Looking forward to Edmonton's chances against Philly tonight which would then put us in a very decent spot going into our next playoff push.

Anytime they don't make at least the SF it feels like a huge disappointment considering the level of talent. But that's high level sports. Any competent team can beat you on any given day. Though apparently, this was far from an elite team as many experts said the US and Sweden had better chances of winning.

They played two warmup games against a university all star team at the arena about 8 minutes away from me. They won the first one comfortably but got smoked 6-1 in the second. Can't put too much stock in exhibition though, which is why I didn't end up going. I was thinking of going but $25 for a glorified scrimmage is not a price I was willing to pay. $15 max. I think I'd pay for that. Though if Bedard was there then $25 I could probably justify.

Another win by the Oil! We responded very well when the Flyers put a bunch of pressure on us at 2-3 points in the game and could have led to a very different result.

Skinner looked sharp once again with a .947 tonight on 37 and 2-3 game-savers.

97 with 5 pts and is 5th fastest to reach 900pts

93 with 3
18 with 3

BUT more importantly 73 and 5 contributed!

Our PP continues to lack the deadly touch though.

Only 6 back of L.A. with two games in hand and 1 pt out of the wildcard.
