Yeah, don't get me wrong. I don't like it either but as others have pointed out you have to be pretty high up or far away to notice it. I'm still bitter about the missing screening on 1 South Halsted...

Agreed, but Gallery on Wells has the best the worst. The big-ass HVAC unit is just sitting on the edge of the roof, completely exposed.

The vast majority of towers in Chicago's CBD have some sort of mechanical or elevator protrusion that stick up above the predominant top of structure, with many only visible from far away or at higher elevations from other buildings. Glass screens that wrap the entire perimeter of a building definitely are an exception rather than a rule. It's an easy VE for a developer to take since it is typically a large cost item and a lot of wasted material for an element that doesn't affect the function of the building and most people won't notice, especially if the penthouse is a shape and logical location that doesn't call too much attention to itself.

Like the top of 1 South Halsted would be less offensive even as tall as it is, if the penthouse wasn't a random off-centered shape with an exposed mechanical unit next to it.

I saw there was a sign up form on their website to get information on pricing for units. Just wondering if anyone did so and how much the full floor penthouse is going for, if not sold yet.

Wait, didn't the revised proposal (which enabled the halted project to go forward) convert all condos to rental units, i.e. apartments? This was summarized here:

Hey, y'all. Been a while. I've been busy with projects, but got out to shoot 1000M in the early morning...this is abut the only time of year I willingly get up early. Shouldd have a few more soon. The crane is starting to come down, but I just photoshopped it out...along with a lot of the interior construction/safety ligting. Made for a cleaner, near-final look.

First tried it on Saturday AM, but clouds skunked the sunrise

Its really a great looking building... This city needs like 10 more buildings of this height to be scattered around...especially in streeterville and river north, and in loop core.

Would be aestherically pleasing from a SimCity sort of perspective, but realistically there are very few viable development sites left in those neighborhoods that would support a project of this size. The footprint looks relatively small from the park, but 1000M also has the 325-car garage jutting off its west side...

there are few development now cause there has been built up of prime sites with mediocre 350ft to 500ft buildings with giant parking podiums...We have plenty of sites for thin and tall buildings...perhaps underground parking should start being looked at more in this city... Everytime i hear on this forum that people always said that the tall buildings will come once the land value goes up due to being built out and now we say well everything is built up and no room for tall buildings in these area..lol

There are still tons of buildable sites in the South Loop especially along Wabash and State. The fact that they're not right on Michigan Avenue could actually be cause for building taller in order to clear the Michigan Ave street wall for the lake and park views.

State and Wabash between Congress and 14th Street is like 30% surface parking lots and single story retail garbage.

I wouldn't count on anything notable being built in the next few years given the economic environment.
