Publicly shamed??

I just earned my full licence last month, and the three years I spent with an N and L respectively, not once did I feel "publicly shamed".

I always saw these decals as a way of alerting other drivers who may otherwise be more aggressive to let up when driving alongside somebody with and N or L. I think we all can remember how overcautious and potentially annoying to drive around we were when we first got our drivers licence. If I see and L driver maybe not make a left turn when there was time, instead of acting frustrated, I would cut the kid some slack due to the fact that he's learning.

That's always what I viewed the purpose of those letters to be.

So everywhere else is wrong by not having their drivers display Ns and Ls? Are drivers in BC just terrible compared to other places?

Libtard is at it again! He was just bitching about Jersey barriers again in the BC highway section.

Now this will really piss him off, but in JAPAN new drivers have to have stickers on their cars, as do many senior drivers as well

He hates it when I use Japan as a reference.

Lucky!! My driver's license saga:
-June 2009: Got my G1
-August 2010: Took road test 1 and failed
-December 2010: Took road test 1 and passed, got my G2
-April 2013: Took road test 2 and failed
-April 2013, ten days later: Took road test 2 and passed, got my full license

And I'm not a bad driver either. Fail rates are really high because its genuinely hard to pass a road test now. Almost everyone I know failed at least one of their road tests. I only know one person who passed both tests on first try.

And the most annoying part is that you have to pay a fee to retake your test. $40 for every road test 1 attempt, $75 for every road test 2 attempt. All in all I spent $240 over 4 years to get my drivers license, not counting the $80 every 5 years drivers license fee.

I passed the written, and 2 driving tests first time.

Mind you doing my G in Huntsville may have helped. It was comical how empty it was compared to Aurora where I did my G2. Aurora had a 20 minute line to get to a counter with 4 people working to sign in, While I walked into the Huntsville one and had to ring a bell to get the woman to come out and sign me in as I was the only person there.

I also passed them all first time, but I did my driving tests in Thunder Bay and Fort Frances respectively and it was hardly challenging. I had to parallel park in Fort Frances, and there wasn't even anything to parallel park between. The only fault I had was on my first test in Thunder Bay when I stopped at an intersection that didn't have a stop sign because I was so nervous.

There's apparently a huge gap between the pass rates of different DriveTest centres.

In the GTA, 40-50% of all candidates fail. Apparently at Brampton, Downsview, and Etobicoke a majority of all G2 test candidates fail.

Whereas in smaller towns and up north, pass rates are above 80%. The highest pass rate in the entire province is in Espanola at 90%. The highest in Southern Ontario is Winchester at 86%. The highest pass rates in a southern city of 100k+ is Kingston at 78%.

http://www.passthewheel.com/practiceTest...s/ontario-g1-g2-road-test-pass-rates.asp

There's apparently a growing trend of GTA kids driving out to the boonies to get their tests, apparently there's even companies that drive Toronto kids up to Bancroft for their road test.

I know Lindsay is particularly popular for G tests as it is the closest test centre that doesn't have access to a freeway.

Pass rates also may have to do with demographics. Kids in the city probably tend to drive less than in rural locations as it isn't necessary like it is in, say, Perth.

Lindsay was popular for that when I got my drivers licence 15 years ago as well. I can't remember where I took my g1 exit test, but I took my g2 exit test in Oshawa. I passed both on my first try.

It has nothing to do with what anywhere else is doing. How old are you to be using such an obvious straw man argument? I don't think drivers in BC are necessarily worse than anywhere else in the world, and I'm not saying other places aren't doing it right by NOT having a similar licensing system. I don't think i need to explain myself there.

I guess my question is why is it such a disgrace for you to see an N or an L when driving around BC?

This will hopefully mean fewer horrible accidents at the end of my dead-end-road, where the 11 goes from 4 lanes to 2.

You talk about a straw man argument, then you immediately throw up your own. I don't believe he said it was a disgrace to him personally but rather, that the "N" or "L" sticker publicly shames the driver who has to put the sticker on their car and drive around with it.

Regardless of ones feelings on the sticker program in BC, I don't see how anyone could argue that you would not feel a sense of shame or reluctance to put a sticker on your vehicle that tells everyone that you are a "noob" (I hate that word but it kind of fits here).

Just for the record I got my license 20 years ago before the graduated licenses and sticker program started, but I have family members and friends who have to deal with the stickers and none of them are talking about the pride they feel in displaying them. (anecdotal I know)

The southern part of the highway between Bouctouche and Shediac is very busy, with average traffic volumes of 20,000 cars per day, so twinning is very definitely warranted. This traffic is generated mostly because this is part of the exurban commuter watershed of Moncton, and is exacerbated in the summertime because this part of the Northumberland shore sees a lot of tourist traffic.

The first $60M will only cover the southernmost 8.6 km of the route, but this is also the most complex part of the project as it includes three existing interchanges (including the highway 11/15 cloverleaf, where the 11 intersects the divided highway connecting Moncton and PEI), and also a new dedicated interchange serving downtown Shediac. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2017.

The next phase will be to divide the highway to Bouctouche, but this likely won't be completed until 2022.
NB seems to place a high priority on upgrading it's highways - I like to see that.

are there any other highway expansions going on in New Brunskwick right now, or even the entire maritimes for that matter?

The only active twinning project planned for right now in NB is Highway 11 from Bouctouche to Shediac AFAIK (except of course the final few km of Highway 2 to the Quebec Border.

Still, NB probably has more divided highway per capita than any other province in the Dominion:

- Highway 2 in it's entirety (500 km)
- Highway 1 in it's entirety (250 km)
- Highway 15 from Moncton to Shediac (40 km)
- Southern part of Highway 7 at Saint John (10 km)
- Other small bits and pieces totalling less than 25 km or so.

That totals up to over 800 km of divided highway for 750,000 people, or fewer than 1,000 people for every km of divided highway. I challenge any other province to equal that ratio……..

As for speed limits in Ontario, agreed the time has come to look at increasing it on freeways. Yet no MPP even dares to introduce a private member's bill...

If the limit is increased though, the rule of 50 km/h over and impounded with extreme fines should be changed, so that 150 km/h automatically triggers such even if the speed limit is 110 or higher.

If 120 km/h, it should only apply in rural areas as 120 is likely too high for urban areas. If 110 km/h, it could apply on most freeways in Ontario currently posted at 100, except for sections where such would be difficult or unsafe to maintain (example: 417 in central Ottawa).

In addition, a speed limit of 100 km/h should be posted on some non-freeway (2 or 4 lane) roads with little or no development. Such would be most common in Northern Ontario.

My latest timelapse road adventure. Driving up the Highwood Pass on AB Highway 40, SW of Calgary in Kananaskis Country. The Highwood is at 2206m ASL.
