I was shocked at how many uniformed security guards there were in Pacific Centre recently. not exactly a welcoming shopping environment.

Shutters lining the streets, security guards everywhere, let's just make the urban environment feel as much like a prison as possible instead of fixing the actual problems of theft, harassment and vandalism!

Because that does so much to help encourage dense urban living over sprawl and creating car dependent far flung exurbs.

the YSL & Prada stores have security guards who sit inside the store, I assume all night.

Hermes and Cartier use some screens that aren't so bad looking. I think LV uses similar screens too.

Ironically, often parroted by the "law and order by any means" advocates.

As mentioned up the page, we're un-loosening bail restrictions for repeat offenders, so... progress. Slowly.

ABC hired 100 extra cops. One might wonder what they are doing.

What can they do when we have catch-and-release judges or idiots like this on the bench:

Court in Canadian province blocks new laws against public use of illegal substances

So let's fire them until the laws change. Waste of money.

Fire who, the judges for upholding the laws and constitution?

Oh wow. I'd forgotten about that BMW in South Africa that had the flamethrowers. That was stone cold genius.

As a law-abiding citizen, I'm perfectly happy to see uniformed security staff. If you had no such people in place, then I'm sure Pac Centre would go full thunder dome like downtown Edmonton's enclosed retail spaces.

The 100 extra police.

The judicial decisions need to be fixed via legislation.

On the contrary, shoppers feel safer with the presence of uniformed security. Across the street at the Bay department store, there is an absence of such, and the exterior is just grimy and filthy: hardly a welcoming shopping environment. Perhaps this is why Pacific Centre mall is doing much better than the Bay.

All of the Superstores out in the suburbs now have gates and security stationed there all day. The RCSS on 104th has security outdoors as there are always people loitering or doing drugs in the parking under there.

DTES has finally exported its ills to the formerly "peaceful" suburbs.

I noticed before Christmas that a tent village had grown up in the off-ramp loop from the Oak Street Bridge to SW Marine (Welcome to Vancouver!). When I drove my yesterday the whole loop was blocked off with blue metal fencing. I guess there must have been complaints from the neighbourhood.

I'm profoundly disturbed that David Eby is somehow profoundly disturbed by random violence in Vancouver.

Quote:
Premier David Eby says he was “profoundly disturbed” to hear that a provincial Crown prosecutor had been assaulted in Vancouver.

Eby says he’s been told the woman is receiving medical care, while Vancouver police confirm they’re investigating two assaults and a suspect remains in custody.

The premier told an unrelated news conference that in order for the justice system to work, everyone who keeps it running must be kept safe while they’re on the job.

The premier says he is reaching out to B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma to look at what the province can to do to “increase safety.”

Vancouver police say the assaults happened at around 9 a.m. Friday near Hastings and Columbia streets, not far from the provincial courthouse at 222 Main Street.

They say the investigation is in its early stages, but it appears the assaults were random and police don’t believe the suspect and victims knew each other.

Sad they can’t keep prosecutors safe just a few steps from the courthouse.
