The balconies aren't random at all... they are laid out in a very specific pattern.

Well even if it's a pattern it's cluttered and ugly.

One Bloor looks way taller than it actually is then. I'm guessing a lot of that has to do with it being residential and thinner than office towers.

Harbourplaza is tall (233 meters) but let's be honest the best picture you can take of it is sandwiched between two office towers. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Worry for now things with high visibility, like any new supertall towers at Yonge and Bloor (The One??) or the Eastern Waterfront (One Yonge??) .

BTW: personally, I don't mind the pattern on Harbourplaza, far more offensive buildings throughout the city.

Interesting. What pattern would that be?

Well now that you force me to think about it, there is a pattern from side to side, the balconies going 1/3, 1/2, or 2/3 across the width of the tower. But from top to bottom, the pattern really does seem to be random, with my apologies to O-tac. To me, after spending several days making the drawings of Harbour Plaza, as I re-created the balconies floor by floor according to the render, it definitely seemed like a pattern, rather than random. Once the towers are built, I should take the time to see if the real thing matches up with the render...

I don't know if I'd call it a pattern, because it doesn't repeat in exact intervals, but there's certainly a distinguishing "frequency" to the balcony movements. The tower on the left clearly has a much larger amplitude, if you envision the absence of balcony as creating a vertical wave up the tower:

The wave on the left also looks flatter/more digital whereas the one on the right looks more rounded/fine-grained.

Pattern or not it provides a nice visual break from the other towers around it that have more conformed looks.

I think Harbour Plaza are the best looking condo towers going up in the city right now. In person the balconies really pop and look considerably better than in photos.

Ya not to keep repeating myself but in theory I thought the balconies would look terrible, in practice they work well in their surroundings. It's not my favorite condo going up right now by a long shot but I do like this development.

I would agree with this. I've seen these things in real and they are a real contrast to everything in the area. They pop out. Overall not a bad project IMO.

There is an inspired feel to the balconies that I didn't even consider until it was brought up.

As I said, when I made the current drawings, back in March 2014, I had the distinct impression there was a pattern to the balconies, even if that's not an entirely accurate way to put it. It seemed much more than just randomly placed balconies.

The tower with the greater balcony amplitude, will be the taller tower.

Yeah I guess to produce something entirely random/original would take a lot of time.
