Maybe someone with better photo software can find it and work with the contrast. With what I have, I find a line above the date with a capital P and possibly a lower case "a" after that, but the rest is mush. There is probably some writing to the left of the "P" but it is not clear with the staining on the cardboard
Hahaha...helps if I read first before posting! lol! Just saw the answer!!

I wish I did have the answer. There's a lot more there. Odd the seller didn't quote the inscription. I'd write & ask but I don't have an eBay acct so can't.

More info on Pritham (1880-1972) here but not what he was doing in LA. He was 12 in the photo? There is no boy in the photo (?)

Curious structure? Something at or near Mines field - to the SW?

Some parts of Manchester are listed as Blvd while others are listed as Ave. Anyone shed some light on this?
No, it's looking east on Manchester from just west of Lincoln, before Lincoln was built:

The "curious structure" in the distance is the gasometer SE of Slauson and Crenshaw that was just referred to in a recent post: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=26683

Manchester Avenue is in Los Angeles, and Manchester Boulevard is in Inglewood.

You beat me to it. I totally agree. My house is just to the left of the road about halfway up the hill.

I defer to you; however, the maps label Manchester as an avenue in that area while the label on the photo uses boulevard. This prompted my question regarding the Blvd-Ave distinction. Was the photo mislabeled or did the designation change? Since I was unaware of a gasometer looking west, I didn't connect the Slauson-Crenshaw structure with the photo.

The longer I viewed the image, it looked more like a large building than the gasometer. But this begs another question, in '28 did Mines field have a collection point for fuel, or hadn't the need yet arisen? I looked but did not see, so perhaps the juice was still stored in drums. Also, the Standard Oil El Segundo refinery was built in 1911 and may have had holding tanks that were visible from the eastern scrub land near Mines field in '28. But this is just a guess.

1911 - Standard Oil Refinery, El Segundo
http://blogs.dailybreeze.com/history...evronbuilt.jpg

Most know the "El Segundo" name is derived from the fact that this was Standard Oil's second refinery. The first? 1902 - Richmond, in the Bay Area. http://richmond.chevron.com/home/abo...rly_years.aspx

Of course there were oil wells in DTLA pictured many times on NLA.

Thanks,Tourmaline. That photo looks familiar but I'm not sure where it is.
It's a "climb shot" so it must be somewhere west of Alameda. Can anybody place it using the taller buildings in the background as a clue. It ain't Ferguson that's for sure but I'd like place it and maybe indications of it an areal or some kind of overhead shot if possible.

"A street lighting post, showing a Craftsman's house in the background, 1912."

http://hdl.huntington.org/

Does anyone recognize this style of lamp post? I thought it might help in locating the impressive Craftsman house in the background.

In my opinion, the post is especially beautiful at the bottom, where it touches the base with curls. -(there are also small curls half-way up the lamp post)

-exquisite period detailing.

...and now for something 'kitschy'.

For the life of me, I can not figure out this bizarre coffee-table.

Lobby of the Waikiki Motel, 631 W. Katella Avenue, Anaheim, 1960s.

eBay

The last time I was this flummoxed was when I thought the apple-machine in the Lincoln Heights Jail was a croquet set.

My earliest memories of Los Angeles and Southern California stem from my family's Summer Vacation (car trip from Illinois) in 1969. We visited Disneyland,
but I was equally enamored with the fantasy themed motels that surrounded the park.

At the time, I was a BIG space fan so I begged my Dad to stay at one of the futuristic themed motels.

above: note the oversized 'sputnik' on the roof....how cool is that? (especially to a 9 year old..me)

The Stovall's also had the....

At some point in time the 'Inn of Tomorrow' became the 'Cosmic Age Lodge'. (or was it the other way around?)

Alas, my family ended up staying at the Robin Hood Motel.

Now back to that coffee table in the lobby of the Waikiki Motel.

ER.....The long standing Robin Hood Motel has increased in size since your trip to So. California in 1969. It now has added some suites and appears to get good Ratings in the current travel advice columns. They also expanded the pool area out to the sidewalk. So lovely.

My father was very cost conscious when he took our family on vacations. I get the feeling that your father might have had the same attitude.

This motel is actually closer to Knott's Berry Farm than to Disneyland. Did you go to Knott's? Knott's has that famous chicken dinner. I had that dinner once with some guys I used to know [1985].

My retired sister has a One Year Pass [costly] to Disneyland and she goes there about once a week with her friends. [I've not been there since 1976.]

Thanks ER for the trip down Memory Lane...very cool.

ER.....This is just a guess but that coffee table might have been one of those wacky lighted waterfall effect tables. The water continuously falls from the inside top of the dome.

That may well be a pig on the carpet. I see several space-helmeted animal pinatas, a pony and elephant among them.

When I was a kid in the 50s, I was totally put off by all the relentless "progress" talk. Everything was to be taken care of by machines, leaving us to bask in endless (frightening) leisure, interrupted occasionally by recreational space travel. The TV told me that, by 1960, every family would have a helicopter or two, ending traffic jams. I thought a sky full of helicopters sounded atrocious, not to mention every fender-bender would be fatal. Ah, the Future!™, I'm glad it never arrived. I needn't have worried anyway. I grew up to have kids in the usual way and still cook dinner in a pot over an open flame.

Holly molly about those two motels! I saw the weird ass table too and it's freakish. The early evil-looking, like a one eyed monster ready to devour you is the vidi-game on the last picture is is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Space

When elephants or cows fly, done that already in this freaky motel!

Space age with olde' tymey car photos on the right walls. Chitty chitty bang bang!

That general configuration (disc, dome, spheres around perimeter) with variations was a common rendition of a flying saucer in those days. Cue Twilight Zone music ...

I agree with you Earl, but the coffee-table was in the lobby of the Waikiki themed motel, not one of the space age ones.
-which makes it even more.......................................surreal.

I love that 'chophouse' on the left...with it's neon signs. I think the small sign on top says HUB.
Remember this scene? Here's a color shot of the same location which the seller dates at April 1962. The little "Hub" sign mentioned by e_r has now become the main sign. I posted "now" pictures of the Teriyaki House currently in this building in post #23310.

Does anyone recognize this street view? I believe the street number on the Plaza Market sign is 4121 or 4123.

20 Century Fox film noir series...

Fox

Fox logo theme ~ click link:

http://youtu.be/0qDdYlyLRoI

Probably the most iconic movie studio theme ever.

"Somewhere in the Night" is an exemplary title for a film noir, and the shell-shocked pilgrimage of an amnesiac WWII veteran through an L.A. shadow-zone of hotels, bars, steam baths, sanitariums, and creepy private dwellings casts an uncanny spell.
