I sincerely hope whatever comes in as a replacement is deeply respectful of the corner building. If I had my way the first two floors of the building would be AS CLOSE to the original as possible on at least the columbia street side.

You mean like this building just down the street? It looks pretty decent and I think it fits in well with the area.

Aside from happening in movies like '*Batteries Not Included', has that ever happened?

Concord named as developer for Metrotown Sears site

VancouverMarket.ca breaks some news regarding the redevelopment of Sears' Metrotown site.

Quote:
Sears Names Concord Pacific as Developer for Metrotown Property

In its June 7 announcement, Sears stated it was seeking approval to develop a comprehensive mixed-use project including the construction of a new Sears department store to replace the existing store. The vision of the redevelopment is a major urban-infill project consisting of seven residential and office high-rises along with ground-level retail. Concord brings its development experience, depth and diversity to the joint arrangement. Concord develops comprehensive multi-phased urban communities across Canada including Concord Pacific Place in Vancouver and CityPlace in Toronto, Canada’s largest and second largest urban communities respectively.

People are talking about it in the Burnaby thread (Burnaby is the new downtown, no longer a suburb, didn't you hear? ).

I'm a little disappointed that Concord got the deal, it makes me less then optimistic about the office tower component getting built.

Maybe another partner will be announced. I thought I had read some kind of document stating that the city of Burnaby wants Metrotown to have a certain ratio of office vs residential, so maybe there's pressure for Sears to build a large office component.

I figure the thing that replaces these buildings will end up being a glass tower, or at least a few extra floors of office, it's too sweet a spot for something as small as what was there. Ideally, I'd like to see something that RECREATES the corner building's facade brick-by-brick, (it was really a spectacular example of brick construction) and then set back a bit from Columbia has additional floors. Something kind of like the Trapp project, but with a historic-looking recreation of the facade built new. Might be an unrealistic expectation.

(The Interurban, the one up the street, is great. But it skimps on the fine detailing of the brick that the Copp's building had, and I would love to see some of that retained.)

Thanks - I was wondering about that. I didn't see Quintet mentioned on the City's website for the new centre.

There's an unknown 5-story, 46 unit residential building going up on a sidestreet near Downtown Poco - no info online about it except for this pic on the general contractor's website. Looks pretty sophisticated considering both the low-end nature of the Poco market and the specific site location. I'll take some better pics in a month or so when the exterior will be complete.

Same contractor, another unknown 5-story, 14 unit residential building. This one has a better location, just off the main retail strip and with the Coquitlam River at its doorstep. I've seen it in person a few times - thinnest recent woodframe building I've ever come across!

Kwantlen in Richmond wants to build a residence (and has big expansion plans beyond the design centre) - but they don't know where yet:

I can't really see Kwantlen being a huge draw for international students. I mean, I imagine that it's far cheaper than UBC or SFU but if cost is a concern then why are you going to school outside of your own country in the first place if you're not going to go to a top tier school?

To experience another culture, or just to get Canadian education alone. There are a lot of students that go to even lower tier schools (e.g. King George College, Alexander College, etc).

The reason the Liberals changed all the community colleges to Universities was to dupe foreigners into thinking they were top schools.

I used to work at SFU downtown and it seemed like Canadian students were a single digit percentage. Non-Canadians are way more profitable.

No, it was because bachelor degree granting institutions are called Universities.
