This one really shows the strategy behind the central library's location. It's in a clearing that will never be blocked by other buildings. It will be prominently visible from many angles and maintain a view north towards the river and Gatineau hills.

On the others taken from the Westin, the NAC revamp was definitely a great step-up but would also love if they ever created a rooftop park/plaza. The building is huge and that elevated unobstructed view on top of the Chateau Laurier, Square, Canal would be a game changer.

I know the Rideau Centre has a small courtyard but I find it pretty boxed in between the Convention Centre, Simons, etc.. and so although nice you don't get a view to anything.

Actually, the NAC does have a rooftop terrace area. Picture I took isn't great quality, so it's hard to see it, but if you look really closely, you might see the seating in red.

It's actually quite hard to find a modern picture of it, so here it is in the 80s.

We're looking at the same sets of pictures right?.... there is simply no comparison.
And from a purely skyline p.o.v... getting Ottawa to a Calgary circa 1975 level would already be a great improvement.

...And before anyone comes at me... I think Ottawa is lovely on foot... but the quality of buildings there (other than Parliament Hill) and the tabletop look leaves a lot to be admired. It's best angle is from the sky.. you see the density.. which I love.. but it is screaming for an iconic tower (or two) to break that table top downtown... that's all.

Lol this was unnecessarily harsh but a lot of truths in there. Especially re: Mississauga's manufactured skyline, it's just so obviously fake when you look at it. Also, the "Kelsey's roadhouse chicken tatters of cities" killed me.

They all have more impressive skylines than us if we're looking at any one point, but Ottawa certainly has the best urbanism from ground level.
