The thing is until new renderings are released if they do release some new ones, we won't know if they really have reduced the height. The mechanical roof height was listed as 486 feet, so I doubt they'll need to remove a floor to reduce the height. They'll likely only need a minor change to the mechanical roof - plus the obvious of removing the mechanical screen "slope". That change would likely not require a new site plan or any further permits. So until it's under construction and reaches that height or until new renderings come out, we won't know if they actually have reduced it. And I doubt the media will care to report on such a minor detail and there's no reason for the developer to advertise that they're doing it.

Pins and needles!

That would really suck too because the mechanical screen slope is what makes the building's design astheticly fresh in a city with too many flat roofs. Take that away and it's just another flat rectangle. Like we really need more of those.

That screen is going to be lit, too, no doubt. Without it, I doubt this building will have any interesting lighting.

Great view of the demo at Block 71. I'm getting very excited for this one to start!

If it loses that sloped and lit glass crown, the intrigue of this building will be significantly reduced. Isn’t that document a proposal to the FAA though? If it’s a proposed submittal then wouldn’t that 481’ have been the developer’s discretion. Unless they heard through the grapevine that their building had bearish chances of getting passed without a reduction, then maybe shaving off the crown was the developer’s perogative.

Actually, if they get rid of the sloped roof then I'd be hoping for a complete redesign of the building. This building in its current form without that sloped roof would be akin to removing the crown on the Frost Bank Tower and it would completely kill its vibe. Removing the slope would make it look unfinished. Can you imagine if Fountain Place stopped abruptly and didn't end in a sloped roof?

Yes, a complete re-design or just shrinking it while keeping the sloped roof....OR it would just be a Colorado tower II. I just really reallllly hope it ends up having a signature mark on the skyline.

Anyone got any leads on whether Ashbel Smith will be imploded on March 25? I've been calling people about it since December and I wouldn't characterize their responses as either informative or friendly. If they're blowing up the building it would be the first downtown since Intel.

But it would make quite a spectacle.

Exactly what I was thinking. What an epic SXSW secret party that would be! I'm thinking secret Green Day appearance and closing their show with "Having a Blast" just as the implosion happens!

Here's a different rendering that shows up on DPR Construction's website as one of their "new projects" in their "2017 Year in Review".

Looks like this will have several balconies as well.

Does anyone office in downtown that has some input on why so many new buildings are adding balconies? Of course my office downtown is more conservative (not politically speaking) than most, but I can't imagine why a tenant would want a balcony other than "hey it's cool." There aren't many times I'd find myself working outside unless it was a great day, and even then I could just go to a coffee shop instead...

If all of these buildings are about cost/sq ft and being efficient, it seems silly to add balconies when they could just add more sq ft of interior space. Though I suppose the same could be said about many condos...
