Ryerson Student Learning Centre. I'd like to see this on Rideau, some place, provided it's busy with people.

Ryerson Student Learning would be great somewhere in mid-Centretown. Core and YC would make the north-Centretown skyline a lot more interesting. I would build 365 Churchin the big parking lot between Booth and Preston (behind Preston Square). 70 Carlton looks a lot like SoHo Italia. Totem would be nice around the Elgin entertainment district.

Another one for Place de Ville phase IV. I think I counted 32 floors, which would make it 420 feet.

The Hyatt Hotel is the white building on the right, and the building down the street on the left is the Charlie Condo Tower which was completed earlier this year. King Blue Condos the proposed 55 floor condo is across the street from the Hyatt.

^^ I like... Especially the contract between black and clear windows/framing and the 3 different roof heights... Ottawa needs more of this, too many (if not almost entirely) all of our buildings in the CBD have a flat roofline with 1 height. BORING

that doesn't look anything like a Shoppers Drug Mart.

ohhhhh, it's the "name it after the species or thing that's being displaced" school of nomenclature ("the gardens" "deer run" "the artisan" anything involving "woods" or trees, etc.) finally eating itself. I can't wait for "the strip mall" authentic loft-lifestyle condos!

I might also recommend somewhere in Centretown where it would stand high above other buildings around it. That's what I'd like to see for this building: it not being stuck in a highrise cluster.

160 East 22nd Street - New York

The Charles, 1355 First Avenue - New York
I realize I'm always proposing 400 ft+ for PdV IV, but considering height restrictions, I would build the first one west of Lyon and the second one somewhere along the O-Train track.

Noticed an article on Metro News this evening regarding a new Library being built in Halifax. While, I'm happy they are getting some recognition (CNN's 10 eye-popping buildings you'll see in 2014), not to mention placing a higher importance on Libraries (and subsequently good design) in their community, I wonder why Ottawa can't put a little more importance, thought, and creativity into developing a better main-branch library in the downtown core.

* Image taken from aforementioned Metro News article

--> This library was designed by the Danish firm schmidt hammer lassen

* EDIT: Actually, I think Carleton's recent MacOdrum Library reno was spot on - it's a beautiful building. If only it was downtown

I haven't been on the campus recently, but I think it's already done.

Found this on the Carleton website:

It's not definitely complete and it's very beautiful. I worked on an assignment today in it

I think I've mentioned this before, but I'd love to see something by Frank Gehry in the nations capital. Arch Daily had a posting on a new building proposal for Berlin :

Frank Gehry Chosen to Design Berlin’s Tallest Tower:

Berlin's "tallest" tower!! I estimated this to be around 40-stories. Sounds a bit like Ottawa and some of the buildings at Carling and Preston ... But still, I'd like to see a building like this in Ottawa somewhere.

It actually reminds me of a shorter version of Gehry's Spruce Street building in New York:

I'd like to propose something like this next project at Bayview Yards, Lebretton Flats, or Chaudière Islands. On first glance, I thought it was just a rock-climbing space, which is cool in itself, but then I noticed work-out equipment also. So, I thought that could make a neat gym for Ottawa - I'd sign up for that in a heart-beat. But, it's actually more than that - it's a co-working space! Here's a video explaining it:

Here are some photos:

* I would imagine Vertical Reality (the rock climbing gym on Chaudière Islands) could assume space in this building and relinquish their current location in that small building...

@defishel nice buildings! I like the brick-like pattern in the, I'm guessing Metal, cladding on each side of the building.

In terms of the renderings, I think any 3D software will do. But, AutoCAD, or Revit to start. Couple that with VRay, Maxwell, or some other rendering program, and some photoshop. You can do some interesting things like the renders in your post.

For free software, check out Blender or Sketchup. Blender also has a few links to some semi-decent rendering programs.

I'm binging on Olympics coverage at the moment and CBC showed an image of a pretty cool indoor downhill skiing complex in Russia (images below). It got me thinking that Melnyk, since he lost the Casino bid, should maybe focus on a year-round winter sports facility out in Kanata instead. We have summer water parks, but nothing for winter stuff. I'd love to go skiing in the Summer if I could, in the very least just to cool off. Could be a good opportunity to also give lessons off-season so people are ready to hit the actual slopes once winter comes. Plus, in the Winter it takes 30-45 minutes from Ottawa to get to a semi-decent ski hill.

* There are other such facilities in other countries as well:

Add a hotel/resort and it could be a pretty good destination spot in the Ottawa region especially given it's proximity to the Tanger Outlets and CT Centre.
