I have to say this really beat my expectations. I couldn't care less about the shadows if they keep this building architecturally interesting. Something has to make up for Scotiabank Tower across the street.

It scotia was reclad I think it would actually be a decent looking tower, its just that awful glass with the visible shades behind that ruins it.

And why are you surprised Telus didnt move their HQ to Alberta? I dont think that was ever a risk. People were concerned about Toronto but I still didnt entirely understand why that fear was present, there was never any real impetus.

Agreed. How would you reclad it? What treatment would you give it? I'm interested. (In fact, it's a building CRYING OUT for some new clothes!!)

Well, at 22 floors, "tower" is probably not that appropriate.

At least they didn't call it Telus 'Place'. That one is well represented in downtown Vancouver.

Something along the lines of what they did to First Canadian Place in Toronto would be nice.

Hmm, I think the Scotia Tower is quite nice the way it is.

I would disagree on that, but in any case the residential tower is to be 44 floors.

Ok, how would you have recladded First Canadian Place while maintaining the original design integrity? More marble?

Personally i don't think Scotia tower is salvageable design-wise... it's shape ensures that it'll always look 70's regardless of new glazing/cladding.

I'd change the glass to something dark and reflective and replace thr marble with something the same type of panels that they put on FCP

Dark and reflective? I thought the Pacific Centre supplied enough of that, esp in a grey-sky town like Vancouver.

Dark reflective glass so the interie curtains aren't seen and with light cladding, marble or otherwise would look good and not all dark like the TD tower (which I think looks great)

I have a feeling that the real cool thing about this building will be the technology used. This is Telus after all and especially now a days the company is ALL about technology and flashiness and the latest trends. I think they will want to make a statement with this project and I would expect all sorts of high end technology used on the property, displays, projections, lights, etc. who knows what else.

Right now all we see is the shell of the project which looks good, its the insides of it that should be amazing.

Too bad we will have to wait until its complete to really see what the final product will be. *I would also suspect that there could be changes as this thing is built to some of the little technological surprises on sight, since many of the things they will want to promote or use to promote their brand can significantly change even in a couple years. Thats why I think we wont know the true greatness of this project until its finished.

What Telus represents is completely different then what they(their predecessors) represented 20 years ago, or even just 10 years ago.

Sorry guys, I have to say I misspoke. I wasn't really paying attention when I posted but I meant to say I think it needs a re-glazing, not a re-cladding. I think the brownish glass is pretty poor looking and ruins the look of what would otherwise be a really decent looking office building. Some darker black glass would contrast much better with the white and would hide the awful looking window shades inside. Good thing is the building is coming up to the point where the glazing will need to be replaced soon, so hopefully they can go with something a bit more attractive this time.

Whats wrong with the 1970s? Architecture is supposed to look of varied ages, not every building is supposed to look like its less than 10 years old, despite what every building owner in NYC may think.

The main thing going for Scotia Tower is the contrast - if they ditch the contrast (i.e. clear glass or silver glass), it'll be too bland. Agreed that the brown black (anodized?) panels are showing their wear. The tall skinny windows (closely spaced mullions) are also a defining characteristic for the building and boost the verticality of the massing of the marble aggregate corner elements).

********

Back to Telus -

- For a commercial tower, I think it looks a bit "busy". It's verging on a residential tower expression rather than a commercial office tower.

- For the horizintal office element fronting Georgia, I'd rather see a bold dark element like the podium at the Telus Building in Toronto - maybe with some punched out windows.

As you can see the proposal will house 512 units, and have a lot of new retail around the perimeter. The client is very big on sustainability and is raising the bar on this one.
