Photography for personal use is permitted, but flash photography is not permitted at Canada Hockey Place, Pacific Coliseum, Richmond Olympic Oval, UBC Thunderbird Arena and The Whistler Sliding Centre. The use of broadcast or photographic equipment for commercial purposes is prohibited.

Well, for the dress rehearsal I would think so. It's tough to enforce a "DON'T SAY ANYTHING!" rule when you have cameras and etc. out there.

I can see that - they don't want sneak-peeks of the unfinished stadium, and out of context views of the show.

on Friday however your pictures & tweets should be fine since the rest of the world is seeing the same thing on TV that you are seeing in your seats.

Well, that certainly would not be legal. I'd just come back

they already announced any banned items will not be returned as they don't have any process or system in place to deal with items so they say if in doubt leave it at home - there is no "coat check" available or babysitting service - the banned list has been talked about in here somewhere

Yeah, but cameras of any kind are not on the ban list. I just know the Canucks rule, and that I don't really understand.

In any case, it's gotta be Wayne.
There may be a way around the "you've run with the torch, you can't light the cauldron" thoughts.
The final leg of the Olympic Torch Relay on Friday goes through yaletown and finishes at the QE Theatre plaza at around 13:45. To me that is the end of the Olympic Torch Relay event.
The Opening Ceremony is a separate event, and running the torch is part of that event, so anyone who has run in the Olympic Torch Relay can still be a candidate for running the torch as part of the opening ceremony.
Ideally it should be a world-renowned olympian, but it could be someone else equally world-famous.
Is AhhhNold staying in town after doing his part of the torch run in Stanley Park friday morning?

^ no, officially and technically the final torchbearers/the process to light the Olympic Stadium cauldron is part of the Olympic Torch Relay.

He put in every bit as much training and physical exertion (if not more) and he did it after battling with a horrible ailment, did it with a physical handicap, did it selflessly with zero assumption he would garner any fame or glory from it, and ultimately sacrificed his health and gave his life for his cause. He and his legacy have raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research, benefitting millions worldwide and future millions to come. No Olympian in Canadian history has come close to achieving in a lifetime what he achieved in his tragically short one. No amount of gold medals earned compares to what Terry achieved through his athleticism.

Just my personal opinion on the matter though...

With all that said he is not related to the Olympic movement so I see the argument against his mother, or even his hologram, lighting the torch. Personally I wouldn't be against it though.
Most of what you said can be applied to Rick Hanson's Wheels in Motion too.

I'm volunteering at the stadium and I know you are definitely not allowed to bring cameras for the dress rehearsal on Wednesday.

Can you point to me where this list of banned items is? I'm talking about the dress rehearsal, not the opening ceremony on Friday. Are iPhones permitted or not? I can't imagine they would take phones away from people.

There is no list published on vancouver2010.com regarding banned items for the dress rehearsal. Volunteers were given a file with FAQ, of which one of them is copied below:

Can I take photos of the dress rehearsal?
No. Please leave your camera at home, as no photography of any type will be permitted, and there will be no storage
space at the venue.

The spectator guide for the Opening Ceremony, upon reading (who'd have thought!) says "Flash photography for personal use is allowed". I guess they want the look of the flashes on TV.

I always thought it made things look more interesting. Like The Who at the Superbowl.

For other events it says no flash photography, however, photography for personal use is allowed.

you always see it on TV

maybe i missed the news and maybe different rules apply to ceremonies versus sporting events

but who does one ask about it?
