Elevator dispute grounds opening of Nations outlet in core

An ongoing labour dispute between Ontario's elevator and escalator technicians and four key elevator companies has delayed the opening of the new Nations grocery store at Jackson Square, and is starting to cause frustration for other businesses as wait times for repairs grows.
About 1,400 workers have been on strike since May 1 after their employers refused to budge on key issues.
A provincial mediator called negotiators for the International Union of Elevator Constructors and the National Elevator and Escalator Association back to the bargaining table Thursday in an effort to settle the industry's first labour disruption in 20 years.
Scott Kyle, property manager at Jackson Square, said it's crucial to have a good first impression with a new store opening and that won't happen if customers can't use the elevator to take their grocery carts to their cars.
"The first impression is the most important one," he said.
Construction of the 55,000-square-foot Nations Fresh Food store is almost complete. The store was to open this weekend but Kyle said now there is about two weeks' worth of work left on the construction of the elevators — there is one for freight as well.
"We may be looking at a July 1 date now," he said.
