Bingo. I'm either a fast walker or my optic nerve has high latency.

Elevator dispute grounds opening of Nations outlet in core

Elevator dispute grounds opening of Nations outlet in core

ByLisa Marr
An ongoing labour dispute between Ontario's elevator and escalator technicians and four key elevator companies has delayed the opening of the new Nations grocery store at Jackson Square, and is starting to cause frustration for other businesses as wait times for repairs grows.

About 1,400 workers have been on strike since May 1 after their employers refused to budge on key issues.

A provincial mediator called negotiators for the International Union of Elevator Constructors and the National Elevator and Escalator Association back to the bargaining table Thursday in an effort to settle the industry's first labour disruption in 20 years.

Scott Kyle, property manager at Jackson Square, said it's crucial to have a good first impression with a new store opening and that won't happen if customers can't use the elevator to take their grocery carts to their cars.

"The first impression is the most important one," he said.

Construction of the 55,000-square-foot Nations Fresh Food store is almost complete. The store was to open this weekend but Kyle said now there is about two weeks' worth of work left on the construction of the elevators — there is one for freight as well.

"We may be looking at a July 1 date now," he said.

Nations Fresh Foods

I was invited today to a food tasting at Nations Fresh Foods in Jackson Square. I have only one word to describe the place and it’s WOW!

The place is very up scale and something I would find in any large city. There is a very large food court area with multiple stations. They are going to have Chinese (Western and traditional), Japanese, Vietnamese, pasta bar, pizza and made fresh for you Panini’s and other sandwiches, large salad bar, hot and cold buffet, a soup bar, bubble tea and mini donuts and more. They will have fresh and frozen store made take out meals. The sea food section is the biggest I think ever in the city. There are several tanks for live seafood in a large separate room. Fresh produce and bulk items such as 50 pound bags of rice. The tea section alone was the whole isle that is as long as the isle in many stores. There must be hundreds of different types. There are lots of different ethnic foods, with I would say, the largest non-western products are from the Far East.

Their hours will be from 7 am to 9 pm, 7 days a week. From 7 am to 5:30, Monday to Friday there will be 1 hour free parking and from 5:30 to 9 pm and Saturdays and Sundays 2 hours free parking.

I will go out of my way to go there!

That sounds amazing but I'm starting to realize that "grocery store" isn't exactly the way to describe this place... which is somewhat disappointing for those who were hoping for the basic, every day things that a standard grocery store offers. Definitely don't mean to knock the place though because it does look very up scale and I think it's gonna have a lot of positive spinoff effects.

I noticed today that Tabouli, the kebab place is open beside the sushi place in the food court. Looks pretty nice.

The Nations Fresh countdown clock begins.

Two-month long elevator strike finally over
(Toronto Star, Alyshah Hasham, June 28 2013)

After two months of seniors taking the stairs, stalled construction and fears of safety violations, the province-wide elevator technician strike is over.

More than 500 workers in the GTA will return to work by July 10 or sooner, after a new collective agreement was reached on Friday afternoon between the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 50 and the National Elevator Escalator Association.

Not sure if it's been flagged or not, but the Nations Fresh website features an aerial rendering of the store layout.

Where exactly is it in the mall? I know Jackson Square, but I can't place it by the drawing on the website.
