Preparing to build McMaster's new home for the liberal arts

http://dailynews.mcmaster.ca/article...-liberal-arts/

Site preparations are underway for the construction of L.R. Wilson Hall, McMaster’s new home for the liberal arts.

Facility Services is installing hoarding around the site, the former home of Wentworth House, in anticipation of construction which begins shortly.

The McMaster Child Care Centre has been relocated to the west campus and new locations have been found for other Wentworth House occupants. Two weeks ago “The White Woman” statue that was part of the site was also removed and placed in storage. The statue will be placed back on the site once the new building is complete.

L.R. Wilson Hall will be home to the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences. It will feature teaching and learning spaces, including a 400-seat lecture theatre, two-100 seat classrooms and a number of small classrooms. The building will also house significant liberal arts research centres such as the Wilson Institute for Canadian History and the Gilbrea Centre for Health and Aging. McMaster’s Indigenous Studies program and indigenous student support offices will be located there.

L.R. Wilson Hall will also be home to new performing arts spaces including a 350-seat concert hall and the unique “Black Box” theatre that provides space that can reconfigured for a variety of music, dance and spoken word productions.

The project is possible through a $45.5-million investment from the province of Ontario and a $10-million gift from McMaster’s Chancellor L.R. Wilson.

On May 27, the community is invited to attend one of two open houses where renderings, models and information about the building will be shared. The open houses are:

May 27

2-3:30 p.m.

or

7-8:30 p.m.

Council Chambers – Gilmour Hall Room 111

^I can't find any renderings for this project. I'm a little surprised they're building on that site given the local resistance to it going back many years. Hope it's pretty.

Sorry, Pete and Repeat.

L.R. Wilson Hall

The building, to be LEED certified, will house McMaster’s Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Social Sciences. It will include:

* classrooms
* research spaces and labs
* performing arts facilities, including a 350-seat concert hall
* public gathering and community spaces
* gardens

Located on the site of the current Wentworth House, construction is expected to begin in June, 2013 with the building opening in September 2015.

That concert hall looks great. Mixed feelings about the rest of it.

Fort Erie's $400 million Canadian Motor Speedway that was approved yesterday is partnering with McMaster University. McMaster’s Faculty of Engineering will now co-develop and manage the Canadian Motor Speedway’s Innovation Park: a Research & Development facility for advanced studies and testing to support the global motor sport industry as well as Canada’s vast Auto Sector. Also, McMaster will be getting a new building called the ExCEL Building.

More info on the partnership:

The Engineering Centre for Experiential Learning will be a 12,000-15,000 sq. ft. facility located adjacent to or near the John Hodgins Engineering Building. The centre will house student clubs and societies, collaborative workspaces along with show space for design teams, study space and selected student services.

The ExCEL facility will showcase sustainable building technologies with the aim of creating an ultra-green building with the potential for a net zero energy rating. Technologies involving solar, geothermal, and other technologies will not only power the centre, they will serve as interactive labs.

Is the automobile industry the best investment one could make nowadays? Perhaps I'm living on a different planet from everybody else.

Some great memories there.

But the new hall should be a fine addition to the campus.

McMaster is going to have to make some tough decisions on buildings and infrastructure in the future. They can obviously build over the many parking lots on campus, but there are buildings that will need to be replaced if they hope to continue the kind of growth they've experienced over the past decade.

Not very clearly.

I can thank The Phoenix for introducing me to new beer. Granted it was only Rickard's Red, but I was naive and inexperienced.

$3M gift from Hatch allows student-focused engineering facility to move forward

A new centre that will foster experiential learning and collaboration among engineering students is set to go ahead after significant contributions from key McMaster partners, including a $3-million gift from Canadian-based engineering giant Hatch and its founder.

Gerald Hatch, founder and first president of the global consultancy, has committed $2 million to the Engineering Centre for Experiential Learning (ExCEL).

Kurt Strobele, chair of Hatch and a McMaster engineering alumnus, has committed $500,000 with a matching $500,000 from the company itself. The Hatch-related gifts will cover more than one third the cost of the $8.5 million project.

The University approval process is under way to have the ExCEL centre named in honour of Gerald Hatch, a celebrated metallurgist and multi-disciplinary consultant who became a member of the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame in 2011. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2015 and be completed by summer 2016.
