The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra to perform free, outdoor concert at Sunset Beach on July 14

The last time the VSO performed a free open-air concert in Vancouver was in Stanley Park in 2011.


The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will kick off its 100th anniversary season with a free, outdoor concert at Sunset Beach Park on July 14.

The Vancouver board of parks and recreation and the VSO hope to make the all-ages Symphony at Sunset an annual event.

There will be food trucks on site, and members of the public are invited to bring a picnic, a blanket, and, if necessary, low chairs so as not to obstruct the view of other audience members.

The board and the VSO said in the joint announcement today that it will be alcohol and smoke-free.

Student ensembles from the VSO School of Music will give a preconcert starting at 7:15 p.m.

The sunset concert performed by the VSO runs from 8:30 to 10 p.m., with the program spanning everything from music by Leonard Bernstein to excerpts from Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and John Williams’s Star Wars.

The event will mark the first free outdoor VSO concert in Vancouver since 2011, when the ensemble played in Stanley Park for th city's 125th anniversary. The symphony will also play an open-air concert in Whistler over Canada Day weekend and at Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park on July 8.

Paul McCartney's only Canadian stop on new tour is in Vancouver

A former Beatle has only one Canadian concert date this year, and it's here in Vancouver.

Paul McCartney is playing BC Place on July 6 in the third-last stop on his second "Freshen Up" tour.

His first live show this year will be in South America, before the tour heads to the U.S. and then Vancouver. This will be his third time playing in B.C. in the last seven years, after nearly a five-decade absence.

Madonna is kicking off her World Tour here in Vancouver on July 15. I was just looking at pre-sale tickets, holy crap, a floor ticket is over $2000. A seat up a level was over $700. yikes.

So to out myself in a way, how the hell has Taylor Swift just kinda...existed for 20 years?
Like, I remember her from highschool in the early 2000's but she just kinda disappeared for 17 years and then reappeared with the popularity of Michael Jackson. The amount of money pouring into this concert is insane from a taxpayers perspective.

I have zero interest in Swift's music, I even tried listening to some and don't get it. However it's a big event for a lot of people and she seems to spread positivity if nothing else. Young women and others could have a lot worse role models.

Methinks anyone who feels Taylor Swift disappeared for 17 years clearly isn't in their 20s/30s with female friends.

I will say, it's a little interesting that people bitch and moan about the expected tourism from FIFA since hotels are full anyway and we don't need anymore tourism... but now that Taylor's here it's a boon to the economy and of course hotel prices would spike 10x, there's a lot of demand if only we had more hotels and AirBNBs.

I think the issue with FIFA is the huge expense we are bearing for a brief event. Taylor is "just another concert". All of the infrastructure is in place and is relatively permanent.

I mean, just avoid downtown for the weekend. It's no worse than Seattle had it when half of Vancouver drove over the border for their concert.

I dunno, I've heard for FIFA that the infrastructure we're improving is generally what we'd be improving anyway and the tourism benefit can be ignored because all of our hotels are full 24/7 anyway. Translink is increasing service for the concerts which surely means driver overtime, I'm sure there will be a heightened police presence downtown beyond what the Eras Tour is paying for, they're closing all the roads around BC Place, and hotel prices are 10x baseline right now, yet no complaints.

You're clearly not in the know. Swift is allegedly personally taking home around 80-85 cents on the dollar for the entire multi-billion dollar tour. She's not just any artist. She's Taylor Swift.
