4 Street SW Underpass - Calgary

The entire thing is going to be sortof a dynamic video screen. The lights will travel with the pedestrians as they walk through the space, along with motivational messages. The west side LEDs have been installed, but last I saw, the east side hadn't been yet. Work is mostly complete, but work on the video screens has been stopped likely because of the last couple weeks of extreme cold.

The stationary text on the east side of the underpass (viewable from the west side only) reads "The people who move through the streets are all strangers. At each encounter, they imagine a thousand things about one another; meetings which could take place between them, Conversations, Surprises, Caresses..." and continues as a story. Very cool.

The Cogswell interchange redevelopment 90% plan for downtown Halifax was just put up. This is a plan to replace the interchange with at-grade streets, to some degree restoring what existed there before demolition and construction happened in the 60's and 70's.

Some renderings of the park space from the report. This was only a "90% plan" so it only broadly shows what the spaces will be like. Hopefully there will be further discussions on the giant pedway (that currently runs over the interchange). It doesn't really make sense to keep it in its current form.

The elevated passageway on the first picture is hideous. Is is really necessary ? I truins the integrity of the street lined by heritage buildings. Terrible.

It already exists; it's not a proposed part of the park. Hopefully it'll get torn down as part of the overall development. It featured partly as a necessary shortcut over the interchange for pedestrians, and won't be as important once the interchange comes down.

I'm in my Canadian Cities class with a representative from Bike Calgary here today, and apparently the bike lane to the Barley Belt has been approved.

The Barley Belt is an industrial area to the south of Inglewood, and is very well frequented by cyclists. All of the breweries in the area along with Bike Calgary and a few councillors have been pushing for this for a couple years now, so it's a major win for connectivity into previously unused areas.

This map is a bit out of date, the city is at about 45 breweries now, but the Barley Belt is the circled area just to the east of downtown on this map.

^Great to hear! I biked down there from the NW last time I was in the city and while most of the route was fine there were definitely a few sketchy sections. Ended up taking the LRT back, for obvious reasons.

I can't wait to check that out when I'm back in Toronto! The only disappointment in my mind is Belgian Moon as the brewery choice for the beer garden, but that's pretty minor. There's an awesome shipping container mall here in Joburg that looks similar (and several shipping container apartments).

Such a beautiful park right in the heart of downtown Montreal, and what a gorgeous fountain!

The city of Calgary just announced the a brand new park in the NW quadrant along the Bow River, across from Bowness Park, will be opening in June! The site is a former gravel quarry. It has been renaturalized and will include wetland habitats among other park uses.

Calgary's Bow to Bluffs Park has now been fully funded and should begin construction within the year. The revised design now includes trails on both sides of the Ctrain Red Line which bisects the Sunnyside neighbourhood, a block east of the Kensington BRZ. The linear park will connect the Bow River to the McHugh Bluffs. The bluffs are a major geologic and topographic feature in the city, only about 500 - 800 meters north of downtown, with an immediate height increase of around 80 meters from the floodplain. Many of the city's most famous skyline photos are taken from the top of the bluffs. The park will be mostly community gathering spaces, which is amazing for an extremely popular neighbourhood like Kensington, so this is a very exciting project. As a bonus, the horrific green fence along the LRT will also be replaced with a much more attractive and visually permeable fence.
