i'm sorry, but this is farcically melodramatic. it's a slightly risqué word, not a porno playing on a billboard.

Before we move on back to the topic, I want to quote SNL's Bowen Yang lampooning a melodramatic George Santos getting kicked out of Congress: "Goodbye, Congress. Queen, they’ll never know anything about me at all because I lied about everything in my life. Then I took a tragic fall. They crawled out of the woodwork. They whispered, ‘He used my donations for Botox!' But it was just filler, slut!"

And there seems to be a lot of buy-in for the track the city is on, reinventing itself from a manufacturing center to a knowledge-based economy.

Also, Texas. I have never seen a state flag so woven into all things as in Texas. There is a strong pride for Texas, its size and might, and its history. The whole Republic of Texas, Alamo, five-states-in-one thing is very much celebrated.

I agree with New England, but it's hard to delineate where New England vs. New York starts. Part of me thinks that the Hudson Valley is the most New Englandy place possible, and yet of course it isn't in New England.
Maryland. Maryland state pride is fierce. And you can't go 5 steps without seeing their flag plastered on everything. Absolutely the only contender with Texas.

True... our grad student from Maryland has a giant Maryland flag in her office...

^ I don't know about this... I think they just really like their flag. And it is cool, so I get it. But I don't think it is necessarity about some higher level of state pride than seen elsewhere.

I don't find a huge amount of outward state pride coming from Marylanders (this being a frequent visitor and former Maryland resident). I think it's likely more apparent on the Eastern Shore, given its greater association with the Chesapeake and more unique identity compared with the rest of the state. But you're definitely not finding too much of it in the DC area (which is a big part of the population), nor western MD (where hardly anyone lives, but is much more Appalachian and clannish... and where you'd think you'd experience more of this type of stuff). Maybe more so in Baltimore... but that seems as much Baltimore pride equating with Maryland pride than an overall "in your face" state pride... like what one experiences with Texas, and to a much lesser extent, some southern states, and even Michigan for example.

Yeah, Marylanders really like their flag, which is very cool-looking.

But Marylanders do not typically have state pride. That's a distinct thing.

When it comes to flag pride, the great state of Chicago is up there near the top.

That shit is EVERYWHERE here.

Buffalo certainly has its own thing going. Buffalo City flags have been showing up more and more on homes of people who have moved to, or back to, the city. Buffaloes show up everywhere, on homes, buildings, flags, t-shirts, etc and on more than just sports logos. There is even a chain of shops called BFLO in the area that sell Buffalo-themed clothing and goods. One is just as likely, if not more likely, to see proud Buffalo-adorned folks out in the suburbs than deep in the city itself. Buffalo Kids was a popular locally produced hip-hop clothing line. Of course, the originated-in-Buffalo Buffalo-style sauces and wings are known worldwide, even if some don't realize the foods were named after the city, not the animal. And if you want to see a local bristle, just refer to the area as "upstate" and you are certain to get a lecture that Buffalo is in Western New York, not just a generic city among many "upstate." A good percentage of expats continue to carry the Buffalo theme where they live and travel.

There is definitely Maryland state pride, exhibited by flying the flag. I would not say Maryland state pride is as high as it is in Texas, though.

I think Delaware state pride is up there with Maryland, although you don't see quite as many flags in places like you do in Maryland.

Chicago may have the biggest city flag pride.

I would put Sussex County flag pride up there as one of the top few in the nation. I have never seen a county flag flying on front porches in any other county, including the other two counties in Delaware.

I'd wager that much of Maryland's enthusiasm for flying its state flag is because it has such an unusual flag.

Meanwhile, the Ohio state flag isn't seen too often since it can be easily confused for a U.S. flag...or Obama's personal flag:

Being from CNY (Utica), I grew up with all of NYS north of Westchester/ Rockland counties considered as "upsate" which of course is further divided in local regions; WNY, CNY, Southern Tier, ADK, Capital District, etc.

Unlike many of those regions, WNY living does not primarily revolve around the NYC sphere of influence. No one here refers to this place as "upstate" except the thin-crust eating soda drinkers, usually originally from, or having family in, NYC and Long Island.

To me, all of the areas you listed above (except WNY itself) are downstate. It's a matter of location and perspective.

The Southern Tier, Central NY, Adirondacks, Albany area... downstate??

I've never heard anyone refer to these decidedly upstate areas (to me at least) as "downstate".

I think of "downstate" as basically the Catskills area south to NYC. If you continued the PA border directly east to join the CT northern border... anything south of that line is downstate.

If you're using "upstate" as a noun or adjective, then it generally means everything in NYS north of Westchester County. If you're using "upstate" (or "downstate") as an adverb then it depends on your point of reference.
