Surprised to see someone positive about a WEM trip in this day and age.

Other than 80s nostalgia, that place is a depressing hole in the ground lately. I still make my annual(ish) trek up north to see if anything's changed, though.

Too much competition kept Save-on-Foods from growing beyond the single store in Midnapore. They didn't acquire the prime locations for their stores; Superstore and others did.

La Maison Simons is busy nowadays: it will open its 8th store in Quebec next year and its first, 110 000sf store outside the province on october 17th in Edmonton.

It also recently expanded its store in the Old Quebec, right next to City Hall, by purchasing the building on the left in the following picture, building which used to house the Empire Cinema.

do they have price smart foods in alberta? i haven't seen any yet

they rebanded a lot of overwaite and save-on-foods stores in BC - word was they wanted to get rid of the union employees and higer wages so they "shut" the stores down and reopened them with a new name and many of the new price smart food stores are smaller that the typical save-on-foods although shopping at them both feels exactly the same

would urban fare do well in Calgary? they seem to do well in vancouver despite being quite expensive, they tried a store in edmonton but didn't seem to last that long

Groceries in Calgary seem to be pretty... bland. You don't see a lot of low-end "price chopper" type places, but you also don't seem to see a lot of specialty stuff. A few "whole foods" type places and Sunterra, and that's all I ever notice.

Sobeys, Safeway, Co-op and Stupidstore. Repeat ad nauseum.

I've never even heard of Price Smart.

"Overwaitea."

And of course Urban Fare would do well in Calgary, unless Whole Foods stole their thunder. I heard a rumour that the old Shoppers Drug Mart across from Mount Royal Village was being considered for a Whole Foods but I'm not holding my breath. It would also destroy the excellent new greengrocer, Old School Emporium that's opened in MRV.

I still don't understand how Thunder Bay doesn't have Giant Tiger. Not that it is really any different from The Bargain Store, but it's strange how they skip this market.

After six years of private ownership, looks like The Bay is going to become a publicly traded company again.

apparently they will remodel the montreal store after the edmonton store
