New train designs for Ottawa along with station names. The Natives were given the chance to name one of the stations. They chose "Pimisi" (Algonquin for ell) for the station located in Lebreton Flats, a area once part of the industrial heart of Ottawa and now contains the War Museum and a park where large events are held such as Bluesfest. The name Pimsi has no significance to the geographical area and does not follow any of the cities rules in naming a station (named for a neighborhood, street or landmark).

Others have suggested renaming one of the western extension stations "Kitchissippi" (Algonquin name for Ottawa River, meaning "great river"). It is also the name of the City ward containing most of the western extension. We could also rename Baseline "Algonquin" (for the college). I and others believe that would be the best solution to honour the natives while still keeping names geographically accurate.

Here are the other station names east to west;

-Blair (named for the street next to the station)
-Cyrville (named for the street above the station)
-St-Laurent (named for the major mall and street)
-Tremblay (named for the street on which the VIA station stands)
-Hurdman (named for the street and area)
-Lees (named for the street with the station entrance)
-uOttawa (for the University of Ottawa)
-Parliament/Parlement (for the Canadian parliament a few blocks north)
-Lyon (named for the street)
-Pimisi (Native's answer to its carte blanche on station name)
-Bayview (named for street and area)
-Tunney's Pasture (named for major federal complex)

Train designs;

New design

Two different December designs

I think the train designs should have been put on an online vote like they did in Montreal.

I would love some outside opinion on both the design and station names if possible.

The Ottawa train choices look fantastic!

Here is an update of the station extension of Lions Park, one of Calgary's dozen or so "bare-bones" LRT stations.

Calgary's new, and significantly improved (though it's not as elborate and "metro-style" as the old one) Chinook Station. I believe it is the busiest station outside of the downtown core.

Really looking good! I have some older shots here if anyone is interested.

Looking at that thing, I'd be hoping for a Chinook if I were waiting there in the winter.

Why? There's a completely enclosed, heated stationhouse that can hold dozens of people, and completely enclosed, heated shelters on the platform level. One of them is in one of the pictures.

So many great projects across the country now! Very excited for the Ottawa project.

Some exciting news for the Evergreen Line, the 2.2 km tunnel portion will now be built as a single bored tunnel instead of the originally planned 2 bored tunnels:

Caterpillar will supply a 9.84m diameter mixed face EPBM, plus back up, for excavation of the single-bore tunnel section.

So, if we are lucky, the tunneled portion of the Evergreen Line could look like this:

Why is that exciting news? Is there some reason you prefer single bore over double bore?

Brampton continues with increased service this September.
http://www.brampton.ca/EN/residents/transit/service-alerts/Pages/welcome.aspx

Highlights include more frequent midday service on a number of routes, moving more routes up to 15 min service from 20.
And improved early evening service on some routes to every 20 minutes from 30 minutes.

ZUM corridors are seeing more service as well, and Queen Street is getting a lot more ZUM service, as ridership has increased on that corridor by over 60% since ZUM started.

All of our tunnels are single bore / divided currently, the double bore has a much more open feeling and it will be cool to see trains going the opposite direction underground

Ah, I didn't see those ones inside. I thought it looked like a transitway at first.

Crossing another train going in the other direction gets pretty boring fast... what's really cool is having a train alongside going in the same direction like in NYC

It just adds more variety to our system, which already has a great mix of tunneled and elevated attributes.

Speaking of the 905, Milton now has Saturday service on all routes (except one, which happens to be numbered as Route 1). A big step forward for a still-fledgling transit system. They now also have service to the northeast industrial area, but sadly, it is not frequent enough (every 40 minutes) and does not match the hours of the workers in there (service ends as early as 4 PM).

Oakville has also introduced a new express route 240 from South Common to Sheridan College to alleviate overcrowding on its local counterpart, 24. Another step forward. Hopefully more trips get added.

Mississauga now has added midday service to an express route (109). It also has replaced a local route (82) with an express version (108) with double the frequency in AM rush and added trips in PM rush. It also has added Sunday service at a mature neighbourhood (16A). Let's see the even bigger changes coming in October with the opening of the Mississauga Transitway.

Speaking of Mississauga Transitway, pre-construction (or actual construction) of the western segment between Erin Mills and Winston Churchill seems to have begun. While taking the 110 yesterday, I saw that the westbound on-ramp at Highway 403 at Erin Mills Parkway is now undergoing realignment to accommodate the BRT.

Also saw Central Parkway Station in person. Beautiful-looking so far!

York Region has more frequent midday service along Jane Street (15 minutes). It also did make Rutherford get 15-minute midday service during the summer. But the rest of the local system just pales in comparison to Peel Region. But seeing the midday increases on major corridors gives a little bit of positive news.

An older photo, taken last year, of the emerging Westbrook TOD. Taken before the completion of the West LRT.

The way Vancouver is going now, I think they will surpass Toronto in transit ridership in few decades. Maybe even Ottawa too. Montreal is already better. Sad what is happening in Toronto now.
