Gap to close stores in Canada as part of plan to shutter half its locations over next two years

Gap won't say exactly how many of the 230 stores it is closing will be in Canada

This is the problem with seemingly every brand being tied to a store now - every time a brand stops being trendy hundreds of stores have to close.

Gap hasn't had an identity in recent years as a lot of their fashions are too similar to their cheaper sibling Old Navy.

It seems like yesterday to me that the Gap was this funky exciting edgy american brand that just opened in Canada...But I guess that was 25 years ago now. Time flies. I haven't even gone in a Gap in the last decade.

Uncle Tetsu's, the popular Japan-based bakery, seems poised to open an Ottawa location

Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: March 7, 2019

Uncle Tetsu’s, the popular Japanese bakery, is headed to Elgin Street, a photo posted on Twitter suggests.

Established in Japan more than two decades ago, Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Cheesecake opened in 2015 in Toronto and developed a cult following that was willing to line up for hours for its light, fluffy flagshop product. The Uncle Tetsu Canada business has grown to open eight locations in the Greater Toronto Area, one in Vancouver and one in Montreal.

In addition to the company’s melt-in-your-mouth signature item in original and matcha (green tea) flavours, various Uncle Tetsu shops also sell cheese tarts, madeleines and twice-cooked cheesecake biscuits.

The arrival of Uncle Tetsu in Ottawa would yield a fitting tenant to take over the space that was Boko Bakery, a beloved Japanese bakery. Boko closed last October after 36 years in business.

There are Uncle Tetsu shops in China, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and California. The company plans to open in Europe, South America, and South Asia, its website says.

"Brian O’Hoski, general manager of Rideau Centre, said the shopping centre currently has nine locations that are being renovated to add new retailers which include Aesop, Levi's, Swatch, Michael Hill, New Balance, Omega/Monaco, Change Lingerie, Lacoste and Miniso. The stores are expected to open within the next month."

Interesting to see Miniso in there. They're a little cheap for Rideau, no? Would have thought they'd pick Bayshore instead.

Here's my team's coverage of the New Balance opening. I'm really proud of the video

Quote:
NEW BALANCE OPENS LATEST STORE IN OTTAWA

By Jenna Drover

New Balance has opened its newest location in Ottawa’s very own CF Rideau Centre — marking their sixteenth store opening in Canada.

Located on the second floor right across from La Senza, the store has charming brick wall accents with leather cushions to try on shoes. The interior decor creates a sense of subtlety, which captures the true essence of a classic New Balance store.

The decision to bring the much loved exercise apparel brand to the capital was long overdue, and we can expect to see another exclusive Ottawa shoe in the near future to be sold only at this location.

“There are some in the pipeline,” says head manager Steven Berry about the hushed collaboration. “But we do have some specifics that are coming to Ottawa, with a pretty unique look coming up.”

New Balance performance footwear specifically designed for athletic activities such as running, walking, tennis, training and basketball. Styles for men, women and kids are available in many different sizes, and the store will also feature a full line of New Balance high-performance apparel and athletic accessories.

According to Berry, some of the most popular items include the lifestyle 997 shoe, the performance hanzo S sneaker, and their comfortable, yet active, leggings — all available for both women and men’s fitting.

But we can’t forget the elephant in the room.

After the quiet release of Kawhi Leonard’s collaboration with New Balance last month, we all want to get a up-close look of his new sneakers. On the companies’ basketball Instagram account the brand debuted the six different OMN1S sneakers, with close-ups of the six different colours coming soon.

In early 2020 — and specifically the first quarter of the year — you can expect to see a vast supply of Leonard’s new sneaker at the Rideau location, according to store owner Sean McGrath. New Balance is seriously dipping its feet into basketball merchandise for the first time, while also offering to help create exactly what Kawhi Leonard intends for his shoe.

The basketball star will make history as the face of New Balance’s push into the untouched territory — and everyone is ecstatically anticipating to try on a pair of their own.

That's great for Rideau. Should go a long way to filling some empty store fronts.

Miniso has a store at the Eaton Centre. If it works down there, should fit well at Rideau.

And Kevin, great video!

Miniso is cheap but nicely merchandised and set up. I buy the stuff I can't afford at Muji there hehe.

Hudson’s Bay Rideau

How is it that Hudson’s Bay finds it acceptable to have such a ground floor that appears so dingy from the exterior. This corrugated metal cladding has got to go. It looks like an abandoned building . How is that ok?

Which one? Doesn't exterior grottiness sort of convey what lies within?

I haven't really been in the area, let alone stop to look at Hudson's Bay Rideau for a while, but if it looks like it did on Google Street View in 2017, it looks pretty bad.

https://www.google.com/maps/@45.4259...7i13312!8i6656

The George Street façade is an embarrassment. That is HBC's face to one of the most prominent areas in the city. Unacceptable that the orange panels haven't been removed and the façade not restored to its Freiman's glory days. The Freiman Mall extension from the early 80s also needs a complete reclad.

https://www.google.com/maps/@45.4268...7i13312!8i6656

As far as I can tell, they've only renovated the interior of our flagship and it looks quite plain. Considering the major investment in Toronto and Vancouver locations, they could spend a fraction to bring Ottawa's Rideau store to a presentable state. Sell the building to Cadillac Fairview if needed, as was done in those other cities.
