^ The Illinois (Mile High Tower) has come up a few times lately. You guys are joking, of course, but I'm interested in this idea. FLW designed more than one high-rise for Chicago; none of them were built. But many cities around the country have recently erected FLW buildings that were not built in his lifetime, and the results are not as cheesy as one might expect.

I am wondering why an enlightened developer doesn't try to resurrect one of these designs? The original sites aren't available any longer of course, but the plans weren't really site-specific. It could be amazing if done correctly - and very good publicity for a developer. Maybe once Kelleher sells out the CS in a matter of weeks ( ), he'll give it some thought.

I'm curious ... is there a resource that provides more than just the watercolor that one can find easily enough? How far did he go with the design?

Can anyone help me with the architect of the Marriott Suites going up in River North? Emporis has it listed as "Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum / Nagle Hartray Danker Kagan McKay Penney Architects Ltd."

I am wondering if NHDKMP was listed only because they did the master plan, or were they doing some of the design work on this most recent version as well? Thanks.

I believe there were no real plans for that - it was just a kind of concept sketch, I believe. I don't know the full history of it, but given Wright's distaste for cities, I always thought it was kind of tongue-in-cheek to some degree. Does anyone know?

I don't know what bug is causing NHDKMP to show up in the public pages on Emporis, because it certainly isn't connected in the database. I will have to look into this. HOK is the correct architect. Thanks for pointing this out.

Today's Sun-Times has an article with a rendering of the 50-story tower planned for the NE corner of Lake & Canal. I like the look of the building, but I hope they plan some green space around it because that area needs it.

"The $400 million, 50-story building is the work of Pickard Chilton, a New Haven., Conn.-based architectural firm."

Wow, that was awesome! Thanks for posting that link. I had no idea the concept was this well thought-out. The business he writes about "no sway" is BS, however - typical FLW.

Reading this, you can imagine he's describing the structural system of 7 South Dearborn (minus the tension members), which I believe was inspired in no small part by the tower at Johnson Wax.

Gold-colored metal facade, huh? Maybe Trump will be the one to bring this proposal back to life.

I guess if it was a long term project (i.e being built in installments), it might work....

but a build out population of 130,000 folks sounds like a long shot.... (i.e practically the entire downtown Chicago population (and then some) in one building).....

The tower crane for The Streeter II is being delivered in pieces and some of it is now on the site.

A large amount of excavation is taking place, but there are still no caisson drill rigs on site.

I'm very pleased to see this moving ahead, I was a little discouraged looking at this each morning for several months but it looks like this will be under construction shortly.

I took this shot of the Wolf Point area trying to picture what the tower there would look like. With both 2Pru and AT&T both reaching up to the horizon from my vanatge point, I drew in a building mass that reached that same height.
